Turzyca Oszimska 'Everest'

The interest in perennials that has been going on for several years has not waned and it seems that the Western fashion for them has become permanent throughout the country.Plants from this group appear more and more often not only in urban green areas, but also in home gardens, next to the hitherto very popular coniferous or deciduous shrubs.

Perennials have a rich ornamental value and are also grateful to cultivate. It is therefore not surprising that many new products appear in nurseries and garden stores every year. One of the most interesting perennials is the sedge 'Everest' (Carex oshimensis), a low plant with decorative leaves, selected in Ireland in 2008.In 2014, this variety was entered into the Novelties Plant Competition exhibition "Green is Life" by Zenon Wróblewska Nursery Farm Wróblewska and received a distinction.

Turzyca szczimska 'Everest' is a new Irish variety introduced to the European market in 2008. Perennial creates compact, not too high clumps of lanceolate, white-edged and glossy leaves. It grows slowly, reaching a maximum of 40-50 cm in height. It grows sideways with short runners, but it is not an expansive plant.

Leaf blades are quite long, flat and stiff, up to 1 cm wide, tapering regularly towards the tips, dark green in the middle, with a wide, straight, white border around their edges. The clumps of leaves growing out of the center bend arched, spreading evenly on all sides in the form of a rosette.

This plant blooms in July. The flowers are gathered in tiny brown spikes. They do not constitute a decorative value, so they can be removed after flowering.Leaves remain ornamental throughout the growing season until late fall.

Sedge cultivation requirements

This is one of the undemanding perennials, both in terms of cultivation requirements and care treatments. It grows well in semi-shaded and sunny positions, in average, moderately moist and slightly acidic soils.Tolerates most garden soils, except sandy ones. The 'Everest' variety is he althy, frost-resistant, does not require winter cover. It is actually disease and pest free. In spring, dry leaves should be cut before the vegetation begins.

Turzyca Wszimska 'Everest' has many applications. It can primarily be used as an original ground cover plant, especially under the luminous crowns of trees. For a quick carpet effect, it is recommended to plant 7-9 plants per m² of surface.

In addition, it is perfect for planting perennial beds, because it creates expressive, colorful spots. It looks very nice as a border plant planted on the edges of paths or flower beds. Works well in container cultivation, decorating balconies and terraces.
