The art of taking slices

Table of contents

I would like to encourage you to take the slices. It is only seemingly difficult, and it allows us to save on buying new noble seedlings of trees and shrubs.
Term
When it comes to scions from deciduous plants, I cut them off always before the onset of frost, i.e. in November. What is this scion? A scion is the most beautiful last year's shoot on a given shrub or noble tree, which I cut and then (in February or March) graft on the rootstock. In turn, the rootstock is a plant of the same species, but wild, and thus - more resistant. For example, a wild rose is my rootstock, and a beautiful twig of a noble variety is a scion.
How to download?
I trim the most beautiful, he althy, one-year or less often two-year shoot, which has at least three buds developed.I cut it from the side of the bush or tree that grew in the sun. I describe ready slips, that is, attach to them a piece of paper with the name of the species and variety.
Storage
I put the collected slips in boxes filled with a mixture of sand and a small amount of peat. I arrange the twigs so that 1/2 of their height is covered with earth. It is important to mark the polarity of the scions, i.e. which side of the cut shoot should be upwards and which side downwards - towards the ground. If someone makes a mistake, I will tell you that the buds must always be directed upwards.
I put the boxes with scions in the basement, where the temperature remains at 2-4 ° C. This is important because if they get too warm, they will become seedlings. It is possible that they will start to take root, and this is not what we mean. During the winter, I also make sure that the slips have a constantly moist, but not too wet substrate.
VaccinationAt the turn of February and March, I start vaccinating.

  • At the beginning, I prepare a pad. To do this, I select a shoot of the same thickness as the intended scion and cut it in the shape of the letter T (only the first layer).
  • Now I prepare the scion - cut about 0.5 cm from the bottom side, so that the cut runs diagonally.
  • I place it in the pad, making sure that its slant opens its cut.
  • I smear the injured places with garden ointment.
  • I bind the whole structure with budding patches or raffia.
  • It takes about a month for the rootstock to fuse with the scion.

In the spring, I remove all the side branches growing out of the rootstock. I also trim the seed so that it grows. This way I get a noble variety. I water the vaccinated plant.
