Ways of sowing vegetables and herbs

Table of contents

Before sowing or planting the plants, feed the soil with 1.5-3 l / 1 m² of sifted compost. We can also use dry organic fertilizer. It enlivens the biological life in the soil and helps with the humus formation process. Synthetic names, although fast acting, are less beneficial to the environment.

Radish, red beet and leaf beet seeds are large enough to be placed one at a time at the intervals that the producers recommend on the seed packs. After that, there is no need to interrupt too densely growing young plants.

In the case of lettuce, celery, parsley and herbs, such as basil, tapes with seeds are very practical to use, which are spaced at appropriate intervals between two layers of easily decomposing paper. Between the strips of carrot, dill, celery or parsley seeds, it is worth sowing cress or planting an onion or leek, the smell of which will effectively scare off the vegetable pest - carrot glitter.

With the traditional sowing of these seeds, you can accelerate their germination by throwing them into a container with moist sand. Leave the dish in a warm room for a few days. Then we sow the seeds together with the sand. Since they are swollen, they develop much faster and root vegetables can be harvested two weeks earlier.

For sowing on a larger area, it is recommended to use professional seed material in the form of granules. Such seeds, surrounded by a layer of organic matter, are larger, which makes it much easier to sow them by hand. The granules can also be sown with seed drills, which allow for even distribution of the seed.

When sowing large seeds, e.g. beans, peas, nesting is often used, placing 3-6 seeds in one well. At the place of sowing, insert a pole on which the plant will climb. To speed up the germination of large seeds, before planting, soak them for a few or several hours in lukewarm water or wrap them in a damp cloth.

Sometimes broadcast sowing is also performed, which consists in evenly distributing the seeds over the entire surface of the bed and covering them with raked soil. The soil for such sowing should be thoroughly weeded.

The first emergence should not be exposed to drying out, as the lack of moisture causes the seedlings to die quickly. In dry weather, the flowerbed should be sprinkled gently with water. On heavy soils, we only water rows of plants.

When planning sowing vegetables, we should also not forget about the benefits of coordinate cultivation. For example, if you are sowing spinach, there is enough space in the inter-rows to plant kohlrabi, or sowing peas with radish or carrots with dill. By the time these vegetables grow, we will have time to harvest the spinach or use it for green fertilizer.
