Some have roots deep and strong enough to burst the rock. Some species and varieties work well in garden cultivation.
Arends saxifrages obtained as a result of multiple crossing are of particular importance for cultivation. The varieties differ mainly in height (the span is from 5 to a maximum of 25 cm) and the color of the flowers (they can be white, pink, red, yellow).
Arends' Skalnica grows on the ground with countless rosettes of green soft leaves.Plants bloom from April to May on thin shoots, flowers resemble florets.
Skalnica likes cool places in partial shade, it does not like the sun. A permeable and humus substrate with an admixture of limestone crushed stone is preferable.Plants do not tolerate drying of the substrate badly.
New plants can be obtained in late autumn from rosettes or by dividing the cushions after flowering. Some varieties can be propagated in spring by sowing seeds.
When after 2-3 years the center of the plant begins to wither, sprinkle fresh soil there.Over time, the plant will recover and start sprouting young shoots again. An alternative is to rejuvenate plants by division.
Skalnica looks good in plantings around stone stairs, steps and floors. It is also suitable for growing in pots and stone trays, it works well in cemetery plantings.
This perennial is a very good ground cover plant. It can also be grown in the canopy of trees and tall shrubs.
