Rocket Eruca sativa is a vegetable that is becoming more and more popular among consumers. Due to the wider availability of seeds, the arugula is also more and more known and appreciated in cultivation.
Creates raised rosettes of wide toothed leaveswith a characteristic spicy-nutty flavor, which is why it is often combined with products with less expressive taste, such as mozzarella cheese, avocado or seafood. It is widely used in Mediterranean cuisine - as an addition or main ingredient in salads, stewed and cooked dishes. Its leaves contain a lot of potassium and vitamins, especially vitamin C, mineral s alts, organic acids and essential oils. The characteristic taste is due to the small amount of erucic acid.
Rocket rocket, also called rocket or rocket, is an annual plant belonging to the cabbage family. It grows up to 30-100 cm, but in the initial period it creates a rosette of strongly cut, elongated leaves, which we can start harvesting just 3-4 weeks after sowing. They can be collected once or many times. The most valuable are young leaves, about 5 cm long, collected from the plants before the formation of inflorescence shoots. Older leaves are bitter and less tasty.
Sowing rocket is grown as a vegetable for its leaves and an oilseed for its seed, although its inflorescence shoots and seeds are also used as an additive to spice mixtures. The ground seeds will give the dishes a sharper, more expressive flavor. The seeds that are not used in the kitchen may be useful to us in the next season.
Cultivation of arugula
Growing arugula does not cause many problems - if we provide it with a fairly permeable substrate rich in organic substances and a slightly shaded position, we will quickly enjoy its taste. It is suitable for almost all-year cultivation, it can be sown from mid-April to the end of August, and due to its small size, it can also be sown between rows of lettuce or tomatoes. Since it does not have excessive requirements, it can be successfully grown outdoors in containers, and later on the windowsill, for example in the kitchen.
It tastes very good as an addition to sandwiches, salads, hot and cold dishes, and also in combination with nuts or sunflower seeds.
