Red-leaved plants

Table of contents

The choice of red-leaved plants is so rich that it allows you to choose the right species for each position in the garden. Heuchera's red-leaved cranberry varieties such as 'Palace Purple' and 'Amethyst Mist' do well in a variety of conditions. This ground cover perennial grows well in sunny places, e.g. in the company of pink Geranium and silver-gray woolly Stachys byzantina, and in partial shade, next to white and pink autumn anemones and Pennisetum grass clumps. Cimicifuga simplex 'Brunette' candlestick is perfect for shaded places or partial shade, although its purple leaves color best in sunny places. In the second half of summer, the dark red leaves and pink-red flowers of the Sedum sedum, the magnificent Sedum telephium 'Purple Red Emperor', are an impressive decoration.

The red-leaved Lysimachia 'Firecracker' feels good by the pond, where the soil is moist and fertile. It will form an atmospheric group with the dark-leaved orchard Ageratina altissima 'Chocolate', the pink meadowsweet Filipendula and the carpeted knotweed related Bistorta affine.

Shrubs with dark red leaves, such as the spheres of the dwarf barberry Berberis thunbergii 'Atropurpurea Nana', also make an excellent background for many perennials and flowers. On the other hand, large shrubs, such as Cotinus coggyria 'Royal Purple', Physocarpus opulifolius 'Diabolo' or Elderberry Sambucus of the 'Guincho Purple' or 'Black Lace' variety, are a perfect background for large perennials.
