Practical Gardener: Digging up tulip bulbs

Table of contents

We change the place of cultivation in the garden of tulips every year or every 2-3 years. Leaving them where they have grown so far for the next seasons would result in thickening of the bulbs and, consequently, the diminishing of flowers. Tulip bulbsusually dig up from mid-June to early July, but first check if the scales covering them are browned, if they are mature (about ¼ of the husk should be brown).Excavation should not be accelerated or delayed .

In the first case, it would reduce the quality of the bulbs and their yield, in the second - due to being in the ground for too long - the scales would fall off and, as a result, the bulbs would be infected by fungal diseases.

When harvesting, protect the onions from the sun, after pre-cleaning, place them loosely in boxes and dry for about two weeks, preferably at 24 ° C.Then clean the onions thoroughly from the soil, shoots, leaf remnants, roots and separate the incandescent bulbs from them.

Until planting, we store the dried onions in openwork boxes, placed in airy rooms with a temperature of 17 ° CDig out hyacinth bulbs every year. checkers, crocuses, anemones and others can grow in the same place for several years. If they are dug out, also from mid-June to early July.
