The Practical Gardener: The busy middle of summer

Decorative garden: we divide the kosaćce

Rhizomes are best multiplied after flowering, in the period of inhibition of their growth. Most of the rhizome iris, such as numerous varieties of the German iris Iris x germanica, small I. pumila or Siberian I. sibirica, bloom in May and June. After flowering, their development slows down and this is when it is best to reproduce them. But at the same time, next year's buds are also setting up, so digging and dividing the rhizomes too early may disturb this process. Therefore, the most appropriate period for the reproduction of rhizomatous iris is August.Dig up the rhizomes and clean them from the soil. Remove the diseased or damaged parts of the rhizome, and cut off the young (last year's) fragments with the bud from the rhizomes and plant them horizontally in the soil. After planting the plant, water it abundantly.

Balconies and terraces: a relative of Chinese tea

Japanese Camellia Camellia japonica, also known as the Japanese rose, belongs to the Theaceae tea family and is a relative of the Chinese tea Camellia sinensis. It comes from the cool, mountainous forests of Japan, it also grows wild in northern China and the Korean Peninsula.Camellias have long been valued as ornamental plants and have been cultivated in Asia for several hundred years, and in Europe for over two hundred. Camellias are evergreen shrubs with shiny, dark green, leathery leaves. Camellia flowers resemble rose flowers, but do not smell (only some varieties have a pleasant smell).

There are many varieties in cultivation, the flowers of which differ, among others: fullness (flowers can be single, semi-double, anemone, peony, full), diameter (miniature varieties are up to 6 cm in diameter, and very large ones are 13-15 cm ) and color (they can be white, red, purple, pink in various shades - the latter is the most common).

In Poland, camellias are grown indoors, but in summer they should be taken outdoors due to better lighting and often higher air humidity. The summer heat is also conducive to the formation of flower buds, and the night temperature drops to their development. Plants grow best in a medium that is constantly moderately moist and acidic.Water containing calcium should not be used for watering. For fertilization, fertilizers intended for azaleas should be used, remembering that the concentration of the fertilizer should be lower than recommended on the packaging.

Trees and shrubs: colorful Syrian hibiscus

This shrub is native to China, India and Japan, not Syria, as the species name suggests. Bushes grow up to 3 m in height. Ketmas have original three-lobed leaves, serrated at the edge, dark green on the top and light underneath.Blooming from July to mid-October, the flowers have 5 petals, bell-shaped, 6 cm in diameter and are similar to mallow flowers. The typical species are purple. In Poland, there are also varieties that differ in color and filling of individual flowers. They can be single, semi-double and full, pure white or of various shades of pink and purple, and two-color.

The following varieties are recommended for gardens: 'Andenken an Charles Breton' with full purple flowers, 'Blue Bird' with single blue flowers, 'Hamabo' single, light pink flowers with a crimson eye, 'Helene' semi-double, white-pink flowers, 'Pink Giant' with single dark pink flowers with dark red eye, 'Woodbridge' with single large pink flowers, 'Diana' with single large flowers, 'Red Hard' with pink flowers with red base. Hibiscus grows in all well-drained soil, except waterlogged soil. The site should be warm, sunny and protected from strong winds. In the spring, sanitary pruning is performed, removing shoots frozen to a he althy place. Plants bloom profusely annually, as they tie flower buds on this year's shoots.

Vegetable: it's time to harvest the August crops

August is a full harvest of ripe ground tomato, pepper, eggplant, as well as pumpkin vegetables - cucumber, squash, zucchini, pumpkin, watermelon.Under the ripening fruit lying on the ground, it is worth placing a piece of non-woven fabric, foil or other material that will protect them against dirt and rotting.

We collect garlic from spring planting. Once we see half of the plants have broken leaves, this is a good time to dig the heads out of the soil.

You can harvest beans for dry seeds, as well as sweetcorn cobs. Its kernels should be soft, in the so-called state. milk maturity.

Cut the edible parts of the artichoke, which are undeveloped inflorescences (baskets). This little-known vegetable in our country is considered a delicacy in Western Europe.Eat the delicate flower bottom of the basket after cooking and seasoning with the sauce.

August in the orchard

Cutting cherries

The end of July and August are the best times to cut cherries. Both species tolerate post-harvest pruning much better than in winter and spring . Although wounds heal quickly in summer, remember to protect the wounds of cut branches, especially thicker ones.

We plant strawberries

August is also the best month to start a strawberry plantation. Shrubs planted in this period will take root well before winter, and in the following year they will give a high yield.

Regular apple harvest

Summer varieties of apple trees ripen. The fruits of some varieties tend to fall off early. To avoid this, let's collect them systematically as they mature.

Cut into short shoots

In late summer, it is worth making a short cut not only on apple trees, but also on pear trees and early plums.
