Practical Gardener: autumn in the garden

Decorative garden: garden chrysanthemums

Pastel shades of yellow, orange and pink chrysanthemums can add variety to the color palette of any autumn garden.Regardless of its surface, a bed or border made of several varieties of different height and color of flowers will stand out in it.Most gilders grown in the ground come from the large-flowered chrysanthemum species (most are winter hardy). There are also varieties derived from reddish and arctic chrysanthemum - all completely frost-resistant.

Cultivars more sensitive to cold should be covered with coniferous branches or dry leaves for the winter.Chrysanthemums require fertile, humus soil with the addition of clay, as well as moderately moist. On too heavy, impermeable, sandy or light soils, these perennials may freeze.

In order for chrysanthemums to bloom abundantly every year and not to get sick, they should be dug up every two or three years in spring, divided and planted in a new place.

Balconies and terraces in November

Winter protection

We protect plants hibernating outside against frost by wrapping pots and boxes. Particular care should be taken to surround stem plants, which we wrap whole crowns with insulating material, or the place of vaccination itself.

How to care for plants?

Plants wintering indoors are provided with a temperature appropriate for a given species and proper substrate humidity.Wintering in the dark, they require very modest watering (once a week).A little more water should be given to always green plants, such as citrus, oleander and myrtle.Once a month, we check their he alth by removing fallen leaves and dried twigs.

Important light

Plants that are always green must have access to light when dormant. In our latitude, even in very bright rooms, they can feel its deficiency in winter. At the beginning of autumn, it is good to cut the shoots of plants in half so that they do not shade each other. This treatment will also reduce transpiration and reduce the risk of diseases.

Trees and shrubs: ginkgo biloba

In autumn, ginkgo leaves change color before falling to an intense yellow color, creating a very attractive element of the garden. The leaves are long-tailed, fan-shaped, often with an indentation on the plate, dividing the leaf into two flaps.Leaf innervation is dichotomous (forked), not found in seed plants. They develop quite late in spring.

Ginkgo biloba is a tall tree, it grows up to 40 m in height, and the diameter of the trunk is 4.5 m. In our climatic conditions it grows up to a maximum of 30 meters. The crown is quite loose, regular, slightly conical, which becomes more and more extensive with age.Branches placed loosely in the crown, not too stiff, hanging slightly at the ends.Shoots are divided into long shoots and short shoots (shoots are quite long, with numerous traces of fallen leaves).

Ginkgo is a dioecious, wind-pollinated plant. Male flowers are collected in a few, 3-4 cm long catkins on short shoots.Female flowers are mounted on long stalks, usually in pairs. It blooms in May and June. The seed is surrounded by a fleshy parchment and is 2-3 cm long. It hangs on a long stalk from its shoots, resembling a yellow plum.

After ripening, the fruit falls off, the decaying matrix smells unpleasant, which is caused by the exuding butyric acid. Ginkgo is suitable for planting in large gardens or parks, preferably as a solitary lawn (it will emphasize its original habit).

Vegetable in November

Bed cleaning

When growing vegetables, you should carefully tidy up the fields and remove plant residues from them - he althy ones should be composted, and those infected by diseases should be burned.

Storage

Collected vegetables for storage must be he althy, reasonably clean (unwashed) and properly cooled. We store them in mounds or boxes with moist sand.

Organic fertilization

Before the onset of frost, do not forget to process compost, spread manure and dig green manure.

Speeding vegetables

You can start rushing chives, parsley and chicory after about three weeks of rest.

Preparation of the seedbed

The soil for the seedbed, as well as for the low tunnels, should be well protected against freezing. For protection, it should be covered with straw.

Orchard: aronia - a species for beginners

Growing popularity of black chokeberry Aronia melanocarpa is the result of not only valuable fruit, but also ease of cultivation (it is one of those species that can be successfully grown by anyone).A very graceful and attractive plant, it bears fruit every year, and besides, it grows well in any soil and in all conditions. The shrubs withstand temperature drops down to -35 ° C. Growing chokeberry does not require any protection, because the bushes are not attacked by diseases and pests. Another advantage is that they are easy to reproduce.

The easiest way is to dig out the young plants that appear around the older bush, because the chokeberry produces a lot of root suckers.Already in the third year after planting, aronia starts fruiting regularly and it yields at least 20 years. The fruits cannot be eaten fresh, but they have remarkable he alth properties. The dark color means that they contain concentrated amounts of bioflavonoids and anthocyanins, which destroy free radicals and toxins.

The fruits are usually harvested in the second half of August, when they are all colored. They can be left on the bush longer because they do not fall off even when they are overripe.Dried can be used for fruit teas.

Pond: drain the water

If our pond is small and its depth is less than 1 m, we must drain the water from it at the end of November at the latest. It's best to use a dirty water pump for this.Remember that the water from the tank is very fertile, so it is suitable for watering garden plants.Clean the empty pond thoroughly, using cloths and scrapers. Let's be careful not to damage the foil edges of the tank.

After cleaning, fill the pit with dry leaves, pine branches or cover it with foil so that the freezing rainwater and melting snow do not damage the concrete or synthetic pond lining. If our pond is large enough and does not freeze to the bottom in winter, it is enough to clean it carefully, pick out more delicate species of fish and protect the plants.

Dirty water vacuum cleaners and special pumps will be helpful in this.Remember not to let sludge settle on the bottom, which, while rotting, will take up oxygen. It is advisable to replace 3/4 of the water with fresh water.
