Tip: different varieties of hazelnuts

Table of contents

Lamberkki and zellerówki - these names hide different varieties of hazelnuts. They differ in the shape of the nuts and the length of the casing. The varieties belonging to the Zeller group are characterized by rather round or triangular nuts and rather short covers. This makes it easy to hatch them.

These varieties are mostly derived from the common hazel Corylus avellena. On the other hand, lamellas, derived from the southern hazel Corylus maxima, usually have an elongated nut shape and much longer fruit covers.

Nuts are much more difficult to hull, but they taste better compared to zeller's.There are also intermediate forms between the two types.

Recommended varieties

1. The 'Purpurea' variety from spring to late autumn delights above all with its dark red leaves.Although this variety is grown primarily for ornamental value, it also produces edible fruit.Like leaves, nut shells also have an unusual maroon color.

2. The "forest" form. The naturally growing hazel bushes are usually found on the outskirts of forests. They provide shelter for birds and nuts for food for forest animals. The fruit is usually smaller than the fruit of cultivated varieties. It has low requirements and can practically grow in any position.

3. 'Cenny Webba' is a well-known garden variety with elongated fruit that ripens at the end of September. The nuts must be shelled by hand. The bushes do not grow very vigorously and are undemanding. This variety is also a good pollinator for other varieties.

4. 'Cud z Bolliwier' is a very fertile and one of the most frequently cultivated varieties in Poland. When ripe, the nuts fall out of the ground under the bush by themselves, from where we can easily collect them.
