Advice: how to build a rack for raspberries

Table of contents

Traditional raspberry varieties live for two years. In the first year, they reach a height of up to 1.5-2 meters. In the following year, the same shoots bear fruit and then die. Therefore, such long shoots must survive two seasons.Often in winter, snow can bend them to the ground or even break them.

Also in late summer and autumn, long and thin shoots can bend under the weight of the fruit. To avoid this, it is necessary to trim shoots that are too long or fasten them to supports.Often, places near fences or racks to which long shoots can be tied are used for this purpose.

Raspberries are usually grown in a belt system. These shrubs, as one of the few, sprout young shoots from sleeping buds located on underground roots. It is therefore difficult to predict where new growths will grow, because the roots grow in all directions.

One of the recommended methods of growing raspberries is growing in wide stripes with the use of a trellis on which the sprouts will be based. To do this, hammer sharpened stakes at the four ends of the row.To them we attach the poles crosswise in such a way that a lattice is formed.Crossbars should be spaced approximately every 30-40 cm. Long hazel sticks or wooden slats can be used as material.

Bamboo shoots are even better, because they are light, durable and resistant to weather conditions. The truss itself should be about 80 cm high. The length of the cultivation strip is practically irrelevant. However, the width is important, it should not exceed one meter.Too wide strip will make it difficult to pick and care for the shrubs.

The advantage of growing raspberries next to the rack is that you do not have to shorten too long shoots and tie them to supports, because the growing shoots will rest on horizontally arranged crossbars.
