When my wife and I were planning a barbecue area, we missed a solid base on which to stand. So I decided to build a special platform made of field stones.
First, I marked the area and put on the plank formwork. Then I chose the soil to a depth of about 40 cm. At the bottom of the trench, I made a gravel bed about 10 cm. On it I poured a layer of concrete mortar, in which I put on the entire surface of the reinforcement made of bars. Later, choosing the right stones, I laid the floor. The resulting gaps were filled with concrete mortar. To make it easier for me to choose the right stones, I put them all around me. Thanks to this, I saw their shapes, sizes and… colors.
My platform, as I mentioned, had to be solid, because it was supposed to be the basis for the grill. If it were to be used for other purposes, e.g. for garden furniture or flower pots, I would make it from finer stones, using a thinner layer of gravel and concrete.
In a similar way I made paths in the garden.
