Taking seedlings from thuja

Table of contents

The cost of a one meter high baled thuja seedling ranges from 10 to 20 zlotys. Not much, but to create a hedge, sometimes we need even several dozen seedlings (to get a dense hedge, we plant trees every 70 centimeters). So let's consider breeding the thuja at home. It is not difficult, but it takes time.

Thuja as well as junipers and cypresses can be bred from the end of August to November. We prepare seedlings from this year's shoots taken with a fragment of last year's wood, the so-called

Containers with rooting cuttings should be kept under the foil or in a glasshouse in conditions of high air humidity. The multiplier should be aired from time to time, otherwise the seedlings will be infected with fungal diseases.Shade the seedlings on a sunny day.

Taking cuttings from thuja

1.For the seedling, we choose this year's increments of several to several centimeters, which we tear off from the so-called with a heel, i.e. a fragment of an older shoot.

2.Trim the heel so that only a slight thickening remains at the bottom of the shoot.

3.Remove the lowest leaves.

3a.We shorten the soft vertex.

4.The lower end of the shoot is treated with rooting (preferably A type). The cuttings should not be pressed directly into the substrate, but inserted into previously prepared (with a stick) holes.

5.The seedling is planted in a soil and sand mixture with a temperature of approx. 20 ° C.The substrate in the pot should be well pressed and watered abundantly.Young thuja should root after six to eight weeks. Then they should be transferred to the inspectorate.
