PiO: silhouettes of rare plants

Table of contents

P:Please let me know about several plant species: kalmia davidii, ziziphus jujuba, indigo.

O:Here are the silhouettes of these plants:

- Ziziphus jujuba (known in Poland as Gujuna) is a tree native to Asia. Its leaves are seasonal. It blooms in spring with inconspicuous greenish flowers.Fruits are reddish, oblong to spherical, 25 mm long. They mature in autumn and winter on leafless shoots. Their taste is reminiscent of apples. They can be dried, boiled or pickled. This tree can be grown only in the western part of our country and not throughout the winter.Requires a clay and wet substrate, but also permeable.

- There is no squid species of David. The most popular are squid: narrow-leaved and broad-leaved. They are evergreen shrubs that grow in acidic positions. They feel great on moors. They bloom profusely, depending on the variety, in different colors. They are successful in the western parts of our country, in others they need to be covered in winter.Perhaps there was a mistake and it is about David's viburnum, also an evergreen shrub for semi-shade sites, producing turquoise-blue fruit. It blooms white, but not very impressive. Young shoots and leaf petioles are reddish brown. It grows best in the western part of the country.

- Indigo Idigofera is a genus of about 700 species. The most famous species is I. tinctoria, a bushy perennial plant that has been cultivated and used for a long time for coloring materials. It has very beautiful flowers that resemble pea flowers. It is not resistant to frost. Another species is I. decora (syn. I. incarnata), a lush shrub that grows up to 60 cm in height and 1 m in width. Jis moderately resistant to frost - you can try to store it outside in the west of our country, but only in mild winters.Shoots may freeze, but the plant usually regenerates in spring.

P:I bought a Chinese davidia but I don't know anything about it. I am asking for advice on how to grow it.

O:Davidia is a tree with a soaring trunk and a regular conical crown. It grows up to approx. 20 m in height. It grows slowly. Both in terms of shape and shape of the leaves it resembles a linden tree. It looks most interesting during flowering.Inconspicuous, lapid flowers, gathered in spherical inflorescences with a diameter of 2 cm, surrounded by 2-3 characteristic cream-colored bracts.

The largest of them can reach 10-20 cm in length. The whole thing hangs on the tail. These napkins resemble handkerchiefs, which is why davidia is often called the handkerchief tree. The inflorescence itself is also quite interesting. It usually consists of one female flower surrounded by a multitude of male flowers, therefore only one fruit is formed from one inflorescence - a drupe containing several seeds. The whole pit is sown with the seeds. Thanks to this, multi-horse specimens can be created.

This species is a tertiary relic found in China. Davidia should grow in a quiet, semi-shaded place in fertile, humus and slightly acidic soil.It is susceptible to drought, and its shoots may freeze at a young age.The plant then bounces off the root, creating a multi-legged specimen. Therefore, it is worth covering it in winter.
