PiO: how to plant citrus, clematis and dahlias

Planting Chinese lemon

P: Five years ago I planted a Chinese lemon, which bloomed beautifully in 2014 and 2015, set fruit, but all of them fell off. In one of the magazines I read that two individuals should grow side by side: male and female. So how to distinguish which specimen grows with me? My lemon tree has maroon flowers and has already grown to a height of 6 meters.

O: Schisandra chinensis can be a dioecious plant (ie female and male specimens are different specimens) or monoecious but dioecious (ie with female and male flowers on one specimen). In terms of adaptation to growing conditions and weather, it is a very interesting plant, because the same plants may have male flowers predominating in one year and female flowers in the other. Also among young males, in the absence of females nearby, female flowers appear as they mature, bearing fruit

Female flowers develop in the apical part of the plant and bloom slightly later than male flowers. Due to this property of citrus, young males predominate in the trade.

If fruit appeared on the creeper, it means that after a few years of cultivation, it turned from a male specimen into a dioecious monoecious specimen.Fruit fall may be caused by the drying of the substrate. It requires fertile, humus-rich and sufficiently moist soils.

In September, the leaves of the Chinese lemon almost simultaneously turn yellow and slowly fall off. Some leaves do not fall off and remain for the winter.

Where is best to plant clematis

P: I bought two clematis at the end of summer. One is an alpine variety, the other has dahlia-like flowers. One has blossomed, the other has not even grown. Is it true that clematis don't like to grow around a walnut, and that's where I planted my specimen. Where is the best place to plant clematis?

O: Alpine clematis is suitable for covering low (up to 2.5 m) fences or trellises, in rock gardens or between trees or perennials. Does not require cutting. The second clematis, judging from the description, belongs to large-flowered groups, has greater requirements and should be planted in carefully cultivated pits 60 cm deep, filled with a mixture of compost and local soil.

During vegetation, remember to water and shade the base of the creeper. In February and March, early-flowering varieties are pruned at a height of approx. 100-120 cm, late-flowering - 30-40 cm from the base The company of walnut is unfavorable for many plants, so it is better to replant clematis to more suitable positions for them.

Dahlia carp storage

Q: How are dahlia tubers stored?

O: We dig dahlia stumps from the ground after the first frost. We trim the stems to a height of about 10 cm. We dry them and put them in boxes, sprinkling them with dry sand or peat.Store them in an attic or in a dry cellar at a temperature of 3-10ºC.Divide the stumps for planting such that each part has a pair of tubers and a root section with at least one bud clearly visible.
