The beauty of autumn discounts

Table of contents

The last warm days of summer encourage you to spend a few quiet hours on a deckchair. It is best to rest in the most beautiful part of the garden, i.e. near tall late perennials, which are now in full bloom and nicely shelter a cozy corner.

Strong shades of yellow dominate the flowerbed at the end of summer. A sunny, warm atmosphere is created by sunny flowers of rudbeckia, rose, sunflower and sunflower.It is worth choosing tall varieties, so that the plants also create covers.For example, among rudbeckia, shoots up to two meters long have the varieties 'Herbstsonne' and 'Goldball'.The height of up to 150 cm is achieved by the cultivars 'Baudirektor Linne' (brown-red flowers) and 'Flammenrad' (yellow flowers with brown-red bloom).

The shoots of the perennial sunflower 'Capenoch Star' with golden-yellow flowers are similarly tall. Quite compact screens over 2.5 m high are also created by Jerusalem artichoke Helianthus tuberosus (its tubers are a tasty vegetable).It is, however, a very expansive plant, therefore it needs to be kept in check, e.g. by surrounding the root ball with a barrier made of a thick foil strip.

An alternative to the arrangement in yellow or red are compositions with other colors. Among the plants distinguished by elegance, it is worth mentioning the purple Patagonian verbena Verbena bonariensis (height up to 1.5 m) and the Cimicifuga candlestick with white flowers and 1.8 m long shoots.The strong purple plant Eupatorium purpureum grows to a height of 2 m. The 'Atropurpureum' variety has pink flowers, and the 'Album' is white.Less known in our country Vernonia Vernonia from the Asteraceae family has shoots of similar length
and covers itself with beautiful red-violet flowers.

At the end of the garden season, the perennial bed is also decorated with dahlias.Varieties with a height of over 1.5 m can be found primarily in the group of cactus and semi-cactus dahlias.A large variety of flower shapes and colors makes dahlias excellent partners for other species in various bedding arrangements.

There should be ornamental grasses in the autumn bedding. Their openwork clumps with long blades perfectly loosen any plant composition and emphasize the beauty of blooming neighbors.The flowering period of many species of grass begins in late summer, and their lacy ears look delightful.Miscanthus Chinese miscanthus, Cortaderia pampas grass, and Calamagrostis reed can grow into huge clumps that perfectly cover the corner rest and protect us from unwanted glances.

Only tall species should not grow in the discount. Plants of various sizes enrich the appearance of the arrangement, as their flowers can develop on many levels. A beautiful addition to tall specimens is, for example, Physalis with orange-red fruit lanterns on shoots about 70 cm long.The soft-spiked Pennisetum grass, reaching a height of 60 cm, is also pretty.Also among the rudbeckia and Coreopsis slopes we can find small varieties that look great even with their tall cousins.

Perennial cover bed should be at least 1 m wide. At the beginning, empty spaces in the new flowerbed can be filled with tall annual plants, e.g. Kleome and sunflower.Tall perennials feel good next to the fence.

Now we plant perennials

Autumn is the best time to plant perennials.They will have time to take root before the winter vegetation break comes and will be well prepared for next spring. There are only a few exceptions, such as the frost-prone autumn anemones and the Patagonian verbena bonariensis. We plant these perennials at the beginning of the gardening season. When planting, remember the following basic rules:

1. Water small perennials abundantly, not only after planting;

2. When drought lasts longer in autumn, additional watering promotes the absorption of plants;

3. We plant perennials at larger intervals so that they can grow freely in spring;

4. Feed each plant with a handful of slow-releasing compost
nutrients;

5. A layer of mulch around the plants will retain moisture and drown out weeds.
