Frost resistant bladders

Table of contents

Easy-to-grow bladders have been a colorful element of my garden for years. They are universal - they are suitable both for solitaire, for compositions and for hedges. I have three varieties:

  • 'Diabolo',
  • 'Luteus',
  • 'Diable d'or'.

Red-leaved BladderPhysocarpus purpurea 'Diabolo' is characterized by a different
intense dark burgundy color of the leaves. It grows up to 2.5 m, but its size can be easily adjusted by clipping. The shrub is decorated with
not only serrated leaves, but also white or pink flowers gathered in the so-calledcorymbose. At the turn of September and October,of them form bubble-shaped fruits, which the plant owes its name to.

Yellow-leaved BladderPhysocarpus opulifolius 'Luteus' has jagged yellow-green leaves. The shrub is also striking in its leafless form thanks to its light brown bark. It blooms white or pink. The fruits contain 2 to 5 seeds.

I have one more variety in my collection -calinocarpusPhysocarpus opulifolius 'Diable d'or'. It looks like 'Diabolo', butits leaves are lighter and the new growths at the ends of the shoots are orange. Its habit is upright and reaches a size of up to 2 m.

Growing bladders

  • These are hardy plants. They are resistant to both frost and drought.
  • They tolerate shade and urban pollution well. So they can be successfully planted by roads.
  • They have he althy foliage that is not damaged by pests or diseases.
  • They don't have too high requirements. Like most plants, however, they grow best in sunny positions, in fertile soil and moist soil.
