We all know the taste of American blueberry - sweet, melting in the mouth. However, the cultivation of the haskap blueberry, known as the haskap blueberry or drywood berries, is equally recommendable.
The shrub is tall, it ranges from 0.5 m to 2 m in size. It blooms very early. If the spring is warm, the fruits appear in May.It can therefore be said that these are the first crops from the plot and that is why, despite the bitterness in the taste, they are so happy. And they are also refreshing! You can literally eat them in handfuls. They have an oblong shape and a silver-navy blue color. Ripe fruits fall off easily with a light touch.
Kamchatka berries have many he alth benefits. They are a source of vitamins C and A, iodine and iron. They have antiseptic and strengthening properties. They support the treatment of colds. They are also perfect for preserves. We can prepare from them, among others sensational jam, delicious compotes and delicious tincture.
What are the most important treatments for haskap berry?
Mulching the soil with bark or fermented sawdust, abundant watering and mineral fertilization are the most important treatments in the cultivation of haskap berries. It is also important to rejuvenate the shrubs properly, which we have been doing from the 5-6 year of cultivation. We cut out the oldest and weakly fruiting shoots to stimulate the plant to produce new shoots and fruit.
- explains the expert Anna Błaszczak
In our garden, Haskap blueberry is not only a fruit shrub. It plays another very important role - a tight, high hedge.Cutting is one of the basic care treatments. First, we remove sick, dead and woody shoots.Regular x-raying and rejuvenating cutting will provide us with he althy, abundantly fruiting shrubs.
Kamchatka berries are very decorative. They delight during flowering, and turn beautifully in autumn. They do not have high cultivation requirements. They will only be satisfied with the permeable substrate. In the spring, it is good to sprinkle them with bark and give them powdered sulfur. They live up to 35 years and are very resistant to frost (down to -45˚C) and drought. These fruit bushes cannot be missed on our plots. I recommend growing them!
