Aquatic iris (Silhouette)

Table of contents

Iris Iris is a large and varied type of plant. It includes rhizomatous perennials with sword-shaped or grass leaves with different habitat requirements.Relatively numerous, but not very widespread, are aquatic or aquatic iris growing in shallow (up to 30 cm) water or in the water zone.

In addition to the most famous native species: yellow iris Iris pseudoacorus and Siberian Iris sibirica, many Asian species are suitable for cultivation in Poland, such as Iris ensata, Iris chrysographes, smooth Iris laevigata and variegated Iris versicolor. All of them belong to the group of beardless irises, i.e.they are devoid of the streaks of short, brightly colored hairs on the outer plots of the perianth, typical of the well-known German iris.

The inner tepals of the perianth are often small, narrow, spread horizontally or slightly obliquely, so that the flowers, for example in the swordleaf iris, appear flattened at the top. This characteristic structure makes them an original garden decoration. The flowers of moist-loving iris appear in June and July.

The color of flowers in the original species, with the exception of the yellow iris, is purple-blue, but in many varieties the flowers may have different colors: from white, through pink, to violet-black (e.g. in the striped iris). All the species mentioned require wet and fertile soils, but in garden conditions, moist soils are often sufficient.
