Meyer's Lilak is widely available only in one variety - 'Palibin' - exceptionally valuable and suitable for cultivation both in home gardens and in public green areas.
It is a dense and low shrub with a hemispherical shape, growing up to 1.5 m after many years of cultivation. It is also sold in the form of a small tree with a round crown, which is obtained by grafting on a rootstock common lilac. The grafting site is usually 1 to 1.8 m high. In early spring, small, up to 4 cm long, ovate leaves with slightly wavy dark green blades appear on thin, hairy twigs in the early spring.
The purple-violet flowers, although much smaller, are similar to those of the common lilac. A single flower is made of a narrow tube, widening towards the top, ending with small patches spread out.The flowers are gathered in abundant and numerous inflorescences that give off a strong pleasant smell. The sweet nectar hidden inside the tubes attracts butterflies.
Shrubs bloom at the turn of May and June, then they often repeat flowering, but much less than in the first period. A valuable advantage of the 'Palibin' variety is the early period of entering the generative phase. The first flowers appear on very young plants.
Lilak Meyer 'Palibin' is perfect for planting in city beds, especially near places of rest, and at crossings, paths and sidewalks. In the home garden, it will work near the gate leading to the property, by the terrace or under the living room window.
Then, to enjoy the pleasant scent of lilac, all you need to do is open the window near which the shrubs have been planted. In order to diversify the fragrance compositions, Meyer's lilac should be planted in combination with other fragrant shrubs : spring-blooming fragrant viburnum and Korean, or later blooming rose and jasmine, and perennials, e.g. peonies.
Shrubs look nice in the form of low hedges. The 'Palibin' variety can be grown in roof gardens, in containers placed on balconies, terraces or in cafe gardens. After flowering, the shrubs are still ornamental thanks to nice he althy leaves.
Lilak Meyer 'Palibin' is a plant that is undemanding to cultivation, fully resistant to frost and he althy.Grows well in average garden soils, moderately moist and well-drained, in full sun or light partial shade. Shrubs planted in the shade bloom less.
