Ripsalidops (rhipsalidopsis) is an epiphyte native to the jungle in southern Brazil. This cactus has flat or slightly angular stems 5 cm long and 2 cm wide, forming like separate members. Segments have crimped red edges, always without indents. At their ends, individual or groups of 2-3 funnel-shaped flowers grow, which wither after 2-3 days. The flowering period of the plant begins in April and lasts two months, hence the popular name of the Easter cactus.
Ripsalidops is often confused with a zygocactus, or Christmas cactus. These plants, however, differ in terms of flowering time, appearance and requirements.Easter cactus flowers develop from pointed buds in spring and have many planes of symmetry. They have narrower and pointed perianth leaves. Its shoots bend poorly and the segments are notched. The zygocactus buds are initially round, later curved. Flowers with one plane of symmetry develop in December. Stems composed of serrated members curve arched. Ripsalidops prefers higher air temperature and humidity than zygocactus.
The Easter cactus requires a light or semi-shaded position, quite warm (18-20 ° C). To stimulate flowering, the temperature must be reduced to 10 ° C for 8 weeks from November to January. During this time, the plant needs full sunlight and limited watering. When flower buds appear, it should be moved to a warmer place (16-18 ° C), from which it should not be moved or twisted the pot.
During growth, from February to October, ripsalidops should be watered abundantly and the substrate should be kept moderately moist, but not wet. We irrigate it with soft water, the plant does not like calcium. Air humidity should be increased by frequent sprinkling.
A mixture of peat soil and sand in a ratio of 3: 1 is a suitable substrate for cultivation. But ripsalidops is also great for hydroponics. It can be fertilized 2-3 times during the growth period with cactus nutrient (low nitrogen content). We only replant when necessary after flowering.
Ripsalidopsa can be propagated in May-Juneby separating the apical parts of the shoots, which take root easily at 22-24 ° C. It is best to choose elements with roots. If there are none, wait 2-3 days before planting for the intersection to heal. Place the seedlings in the cactus substrate so that only the base of the shoot is covered.
Easter cactus has the rare property of absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen at night, so it's a good idea to decorate your bedroom with it. It looks beautiful on a windowsill and as an ornament in a hanging basket.
