Blackberry without thorns - growing blackberries

Table of contents

To create a beautiful garden and at the same time useful, it is worth planting several fruit trees and shrubs in it.

For fans of black fruits, I recommend not currants or blueberries, but blackberries. Especially its thornless variety 'Orkan'. Some time ago I read about the valuable nutritional and he alth benefits of blackberries and decided to grow them in my garden.

I chose thornless blackberry so that harvesting the fruit would not be burdensome for the hands. Orkan is a very popular variety. I know at least a few people who grow these blackberries in their garden and would not exchange them for anything else. These are shrubs with low soil requirements. When covered in winter, they tolerate frost well, and in the season they bear fruit abundantly and for a long time.

Blackberries are one of the larger shrubs. They grow up to two meters, so they need to be protected from the wind, and even tied or built special structures.

I planted blackberries in the garden by the fence and additionally shaped them with a wire support. In this way, I obtained an impressive hedge that looks beautiful throughout the season. In early spring it is covered with white flowers, in summer it bears fruit, and in autumn it shimmers with golden and red leaves.

The fruits of 'Orkana' are large, slightly oblong and aromatic. They have a sweet and sour taste. Fresh is the best, but I also make juices. I have found out several times that blackberry juice is an effective remedy for colds. It helps lower the fever and acts as an expectorant. In addition, it is said to also slow down the aging of the body, protect against cancer and relieve stress. So I drink it very regularly in the hope of being forever young …

As already mentioned, the blackberry is not very demanding. In fact, you mainly have to remember about cutting. I advise future blackberry growers to remember that these bushes bear fruit on two-year-old shoots, which we remove only after harvesting. I cut two-year-old shoots close to the ground. I trim young shoots 30-40 cm so that they branch and give off numerous shoots.
