How to choose plants when buying

The author of the text is Jakub Kurowski from the Polish Nurserymen Association

There are thousands of varieties of ornamental plants in the offers of garden stores and nurseries. Currently, over 6,000 species and varieties are produced in Polish nurseries. How not to get lost in all this? How do we know which plant will work best for us?

Before shopping

Before visiting a garden center or nursery in search of new plants, it is good to prepare for it.Let's think about the conditions in our garden, especially in places where we plan new plantings.

Is it sunny there or is there shade? Is the place warm and quiet or, on the contrary, exposed to cold winds? How much space is there in the garden? Can we plant a large, fast-growing shrub or tree there, or would a dwarf form or a creeper be better?

It is also worth paying attention to when we spend the most time in the garden. Let's recall which species we already have and when they are the most attractive.Let's choose another one so that the time when our garden is blooming would be even longer.Let's think what we are missing. Maybe the colors are too dark and you need to plant something to brighten the dark green wall or the gloomy corner? Let's walk around our garden, carefully looking at it, and look at it from different places.

Where to find information about plants?

Professional staff is employed in good garden centers and plant sale points at nurseries. It is worth consulting your ideas with him and asking for advice. Many plant producers are eager to share their experiences on the Internet. Some of these websites are very extensive and contain a lot of valuable and reliable information.

Let's not look for the cheapest plants

It is worth paying a bit more for well-kept goods from a reputable manufacturer. What exactly should we pay attention to? First of all, we should choose he althy specimens, without symptoms of diseases or signs of pest feeding. Plants should be well-branching, i.e. have many shoots.

In the case of trees, the trunk should be straight and undamaged. The quality of the root system has a great influence on the success of plantings. It should be extensive, in proportion to the size of the aboveground part.In the case of plants sold in containers, the root should be evenly distributed and visible after removing the pot.It is important, however, that it is not too compact, the so-calledfelted.

We can ask the seller to show the root ball - it should be compact and not fall apart. Plants in pots should be well hydrated - in small pots the substrate dries up easily, which makes it difficult to adopt later.Remember that plants bought in containers can be planted almost all year round, from the beginning of spring to the end of autumn.

In the case of plants without a lump (with the so-called bare root), it is extremely important that the root is not dry. This must be taken care of especially in the period between purchase and planting. These types of plants are planted in the fall, after the end of vegetation, in a leafless state or in the spring before the growth begins. Plants with a root ball (larger conifers, trees) are also planted in spring and autumn.

The solid should be secured against disintegration by means of a fabric called jute, and for larger specimens also a non-galvanized wire mesh We do not remove these safeguards during planting, we can only loosen the mesh at the root neck. The mesh decomposes after a few months without damaging the roots.
