Winter dormancy of plants
Remembering that plants are dormant in December, we ensure them a sufficiently low temperature and limit watering. We also reduce the intensity of sprinkling, because too high air humidity at low temperatures favors the spread of fungal diseases. We constantly monitor the condition and he alth of plants, while removing any diseased or damaged organs and fallen leaves to prevent infections.
We are breeding Araucaria
Winter is the best time for araucaria to propagate through shoot cuttings. However, it must be remembered that the correct plant shape, with shoots arranged in whorls, can be obtained by preparing apical cuttings covering the leading shoot with the youngest layer of the side branches. Plants obtained from side shoots will behave like side branches - they will grow horizontally. The cuttings are taken by cutting the top of the plant about 4 cm under the whorl of the side shoots. The wounds secrete resin, so the seedling is left for several hours, the resin is allowed to drain and then removed. The seedlings are covered with foil so that they do not dry out. The rooting temperature should be between 20-24 ° C. Rooting takes several months.
We ensure a good position
Autumn and winter are difficult times for potted plants. Kept in too warm, centrally heated rooms, they cannot pass the rest period properly. On the other hand, their development is hampered by a short day and a low intensity of solar radiation. In order to best survive the winter, they need to have the best possible access to the sun by placing them as close to the window as possible. In addition, too densely grown plants should be x-rayed, removing too dense, overlapping shoots.
Correct temperature
We try to provide potted plants with conditions as close to the proper ones as possible. For most plants, fall is a period of dormancy. During this time, the temperature should be significantly lowered, especially at night. Often, preferably once a day, we sprinkle the plants.
We collect fern spores
Ripe leaves with piles of fern sporangia are cut and packed into paper bags or envelopes. It is best to sow them into pots in December and January, but it can also be done throughout the year. For this purpose, prepare a well-sifted substrate with a pH of 5-6.
