In the first year, perennial varieties produce only low leaf rosettes. Only in the second year do they release leafy flower shoots, which, depending on the variety, can reach 20 to 50 cm.The inflorescences are clustered in panicles and maintain flowering from July to October. The carnation blooms white or in shades of pink or red. Many varieties also have two-color flowers - speckled or striped.
Bearded carnation feels best in warm, sunny positions. For cultivation, we choose a permeable substrate containing calcium and a large amount of nutrients.
Annual cloves are grown from February to April at 15-20 ° C. From mid-May, they are planted into the ground at intervals of 20-25 cm.Two-year varieties are sown from late May to June and planted in a bed at the beginning of August.Young plants are covered with spruce branches for winter.
Water the garden carnations moderately. Plants are susceptible to diseases (rust) and pests (aphids, spider mites). Sick leaves should be removed.
The carnation can be used in bed plantings, e.g. with margaritas, flames or poppies, or as a pot plant.
Cloves are popular vase plants. The shoots are ready to cut as soon as the first flowers open.
