A dozen or so different species of rose grow in their natural state in Poland. Most often in the wild - growing in open spaces and between fields - you can meet the wild rose Rosa canina. These shrubs are the habitat of all insects and larger animals. Why is it worth planting roses in your garden? The answer is simple - for their beauty. From early spring, these shrubs are covered with light green leaves, followed by white, salmon or pink flowers, filling the garden with an unusual aroma. Flowering lasts almost three months and creates a fabulous aura in our gardens. From early autumn, carmine red and orange fruits appear among the foliage. The unbroken ones will remain on the bush even when all the leaves fall off. In winter, when it gets gray and gloomy, they will be a colorful accent to cheer up the raw landscape of the garden. Also, greenish thin shoots, even without leaves, will be a winter decoration of the garden. Long rose shoots rising vertically and then slowly drooping, often reaching 3 meters in length.
Due to their free habit and associations with the natural environment, wild roses are especially suitable for naturalistic gardens. Rose bushes can be planted individually or form a cluster consisting of several different species or varieties that differ in growth strength, habit and fruit. Despite the undoubted ornamental value, wild rose and many other species are, however, among fruit plants. This is due to the small fruit that abundantly covers the entire bush.
Precious fruits.A wild rose, as well as centipedes, wrinkled roses and many others are referred to as fruit roses. From the earliest years, rose hips were used as herbal material. It is worth knowing that fruits contain ten times more vitamin C than black currants and almost twenty times more than lemon! In addition, they contain many essential oils, tannins and carotenoids, which makes them extremely valuable. However, they are not eaten raw. Various kinds of preserves are made from the fruit, it is dried, and it is also used to make very good wines. Rose wine is rated very highly and, according to many experts, its taste is as good as the best grape wines.
Rosehips are harvested at an unusual date, namely in winter. When it is gray and sad around, red fruit still hangs on the rose bushes, which after frosts definitely soften and give off juice easily. It is worth knowing, however, that after freezing, the fruits lose a lot of valuable vitamin C, so you can harvest them earlier.
Place in the garden. The wild rose is exceptionally easy to grow. It will grow well in almost any soil and anywhere in the garden. Some problems can only be caused by trimming the bushes due to the spike covered shoots. In nature, wild rose always occurs in open bright spaces, so it also requires a sunny position in the garden. Usually the bush is not attacked by any pests or diseases. You can breed a wild rose yourself. The easiest way to get seedlings is to bend long shoots to the ground and sprinkle them with soil. After a year, cut offthe rooted part and replant it permanently. The bush can also be propagated by sowing seeds, but it is more difficult because the seeds require long stratification.
