June in the vegetable garden

We plant cucumbers

We can plant cucumber seedlings until the middle of the month. The place for their cultivation should be pre-fed with well-decomposed compost, which also promotes better soil moisture.Cucumbers and other cucumbers, due to the relatively shallow root system, are sensitive to water deficiency in the soil.

The position may be slightly shaded at the beginning, which will also reduce too much water evaporation from the soil - e.g. beans or peas for early harvesting may grow in the immediate vicinity, which additionally has a positive effect on the growth of cucumbers. In coordinate cultivation, other good companions for cucumbers will be e.g.kohlrabi, cabbage, lettuce, beetroot, celery, spinach, dill, onion or sweetcorn.

Sowing sugar peas

The beginning of June is the last time to sow sugar peas.Depending on the variety, the length of its growing season is from 60 to 120 days.Among the varieties, the most available are fixed ones, e.g. 'Iłówiecki' (medium early 90 days), growing up to 75 cm, which requires supports.

The 'Bajka' variety is a fruitful, successively maturing variety, also requiring supports. Peas should be sown at a distance of 20-40 x 4-6 cm; if sowing in single rows, use a wider distance, for double rows (on both sides of the support), the minimum distance should be 20 cm.Peas are sensitive to water scarcity, especially in theperiod
creating pods, so it is worth watering it.

The plant will tell you the truth

One of the important aspects of caring for and growing vegetables is to watch them carefully as they grow Chlorosis may appear on the leaves of plants - initially light yellow discoloration on the leaves, which may indicate a deficiency of nutrients in the soil. Those formed on older leaves may indicate a deficiency of macronutrients (N, P, K, Mg), and chlorosis on young leaves suggest a lack of micronutrients (Ca, Mn, Fe, S, Cu, B, Mo, Zn ), because they move slowly in plant tissues.

After excluding other biotic factors, the vegetables should be fed with compound liquid fertilizer. We perform this treatment in the morning or afternoon so that the plants do not get burnt in strong sunlight and too high temperature.

We collect onion plant chives

Ordinary onions or other onions (e.g. a seven-year-old grown as an annual plant) can be successively harvested during the so-called breaks for direct consumption.Their young, delicate, tubular leaves with the still undeveloped onion part are best torn out whole. Due to the bundle root system of the bulbs, it is worth taking a break when the soil is well moistened - then the roots of the bulbs, which are to continue to grow, will not be damaged too much.

Intriguing variety - stem lettuce

Stalk lettuce (asparagus lettuce or Cracow Głąbiki) is grown relatively rarely. The usable part is the stalk, which is prepared like asparagus or pickled like cucumbers. The young leaves can also be eaten, and the taste is reminiscent of romaine lettuce with a hint of bitterness.Harvesting is carried out after the formation of inflorescence shoots, but before they bloom - at the latest when flower buds begin to form. The thickness of the shoot at the bottom should not exceed 6 cm.

Later shoots harden, become stringy and bitter. The stalks can be steamed, lightly stewed in butter or pickled, and the younger shoots can be eaten raw.Growing the stalk lettuce is easy. Its vegetation period from sowing to harvesting is 10-14 weeks, therefore it can be grown in the forecrop and aftercrop. Its soil requirements are lower than that of head lettuce, but the water requirements are similar or even higher.
