The first flowers of the squill open in mid-February. The best known species include Scilla bifolia and Scilla sibirica. Both species are cold hardy. The most common varieties are blue and purple flowers, in addition to them there are also white and pink varieties.
The flowers of the squill are star-shaped or bell-shaped and gathered in loose clusters. Each of the six flowers is decorated with a dark stripe. Bulbs reach a height of 15 to 20 centimeters.
The ideal conditions for the cultivation of squill are sunny or semi-shaded places. It grows well in loose soil and rich in basic nutrients.During the flowering period, the soil must be kept at a constant, moderate level of humidity. Also in summer, the substrate must not dry out.
Bulbs are very durable. Easily and spontaneously reproduce by seeds and adventitious bulbs. Plants should be grouped together. The bulbs are planted in the fall to a depth of 8 cm with 10 cm spacing in the rows. Most squillies are winter hardy, but it is nevertheless worth covering them with compost for the winter.
Bulbs look extremely attractive in the shade of bushes and in rockeries. They can also be grown on lawns and garden meadows, where they reproduce quickly and turn green turf into an ocean of blue flowers over time. Thanks to this, the garden acquires a thoroughly naturalistic character.
Beautiful but rare species of Scilla autumnalis blooms from August to September. This onion is very durable.
