The dormant state of this typically spring-used perennial lasts until the turn of December / January. The first buds appearing are a sign of the approaching spring, and the proper harvest time is at the turn of April and May.One of the care treatments is bleaching the petioles of the rhubarb.
It consists in cutting off the access of light to the petioles by using special ceramic covers or a bottomless bucket, or even a cardboard box. Thanks to bleaching, we obtain juicier, less hard and delicate petioles that are not fibrous. This treatment is carried out in the spring, when the rhubarb leaves with sufficiently long petioles.
