Construction of a winter garden - ventilation, heating and flooring

Table of contents

Construction of a winter gardeninvolves the implementation of the supporting structure of the orangery and its glazing. In order to make being in the winter garden pleasant, however, you also need to think about the elements that will provide you with adequate comfort, such as ventilation, heating, and the use of appropriate materials for the floor or winter garden floor.

Winter garden ventilation

Conservatories are usually almost entirely glazed, which makes them vulnerable to any climatic changes. Especially in the summer, with intense sunlight, the winter garden can turn into a greenhouse. It will be stuffy and hot. Anyway, high temperatures are not the only problem. Plants that we will grow may require watering and sprinkling, which will make the air excessively humid. This also needs to be de alt with.

In order to prevent excessive temperature increases, in addition to shading systems (e.g. roller blinds), an efficient systemventilation of the winter gardenand, unfortunately, proper air exchange will not be ensured by tilting windows or sliding doors (not always we will be able or want to open them). The ventilation system must force sufficient air circulation, which takes place automatically without our intervention, so that it is possible to control the temperature also when you are away from home. Simple and reliable as well as sufficiently efficientventilation of the winter gardenshould have low-placed air vents and high-mounted roof vents. When this does not meet our expectations, it is possible to force ventilation by using air conditioners. Then the ventilator is replaced with a mechanical device controlled by central units with a set of sensors.

Winter garden heating

In summer, it is necessary to prevent excessive temperature increases, and here the above-mentioned air conditioning is necessary. In winter, on the other hand, it may turn out to be too cool in the winter garden. Of course, you can opt out ofheating the winter garden , but then the interior of the room adjacent to the winter garden must be separated by a tight partition (e.g. sliding doors). In this case, the garden has a positive effect on the energy balance of the entire building, and can even be treated as a factor reducing energy consumption. However, if we want the householders to have thermal comfort and spend a bit more time in the winter garden, it will be necessaryheating the winter gardenOf course, having heating also determines the selection of plants.

If appropriate insulating materials were used to build the structure, it is enough to insert an ordinary radiator to heat a small winter garden.Heating a glazed conservatory does not have to be costly, because heat losses are offset by the heat obtained from solar energy.

Winter garden floor

" The functionality and optical effect of our conservatory will be affected by what we walk on, i.e. its floor. All natural materials such as stone, brick, terracotta, stoneware or wood are perfect for this. The material for the floor must be selected so that it blends well with the floor of the living room, from which the entrance to the winter garden will be, so that the orangery becomes an effective extension of the room. "
One of the most common materials for awinter garden flooris wood. It does not necessarily have to be the same parquet as in the room connecting to the winter garden. As an alternative, you can use a wooden pavement. It is made of a rectangular cube (the recommended types of wood are pine, larch, spruce and oak) with a thickness of several cm.The wood should be sanded and impregnated. It can also be varnished. The advantage of wooden pavement is good thermal insulation and soundproofing of footsteps. The disadvantage, however, is the necessity to perform numerous beauty treatments.

If you need a more durable floor material, natural stone will be perfect (the most durable will be granite, bas alt and quartzite floors. Sandstone floors will be slightly less durable, but also very abrasion resistant). Natural stone tiles will not be completely smooth, so they should be well combined to form a dense surface. Unfortunately, all stains must be removed immediately, as the liquid substances quickly penetrate the structure of the stone floor and are very difficult to remove. Besides, such a floor will be relatively expensive.
A much cheaper option will bewinter garden floormade of artificial stone. Artificial stone slabs, as well as concrete, stone and ceramic tiles as well as raw bricks, are very durable and appear smooth.
The clinker will also look great. Clinker tiles are resistant, hard and easy to clean. They are often used for flooring in living quarters, so it will be easy for you to compose a winter garden floor with a floor in an adjoining living room. Clinker tiles can be smooth (note: it's easy to slip on them!) Or with a rough surface (perfect for rustic interiors).

Another material worth paying attention to is terracotta. Like brick, it is made of clay and has a porous texture. Its unique charm is determined by warm, muffled, often unevenly distributed colors. Terracotta tiles are produced in various shapes, so you can create a floor with a mosaic look.
