Plum fruit is a pest that causes worming of plumsIf we noticed small caterpillars in the plums, feeding near the stone and contaminating the fruit with granular faeces, this is the plum fruit. Owocówka plumówka
The adult plum fruit insect is a small butterflywith a wingspan of 12 to 14 mm. The first pair of wings is gray with dark spots, and the rear pair is slightly lighter, gray-brown. Butterflies fly on warm evenings, laying their eggs on fruit buds in May (first generation), and then on already ripening plum fruits from mid-July until the end of August (second generation). These terms are quite important, because that's when you need to takeactions to combat the plum fruit
Caterpillars hatch from the eggs they have laidand immediately bite into the fruit. The caterpillars are initially white with a black head, and towards the end of their development they become intensely pink, and this is the form we usually find in plums. Unfortunately, wormy fruit, contaminated with caterpillar droppings, cannot be eaten.
In addition to plums, fruit plum can also feed onałycz, peach, apricot, blackthorn, and sometimes cherries. The latter, however, are usually attacked by another pest - the tyreniola seed.
The plum fruit hibernates in cracks in the bark of treesand in the litter under the trees. And since the cracked bark is most often found on old trees, there will also be the most wormy plums on such.
If we have already noticed wormy plums, then we mustfight against the plum fruitto prevent worming plums next year.
Basicways to combat the fruit flake plums in amateur cropsis collecting and destroying wormy fruit andmounting corrugated paper bandson tree trunks, which will stop wandering caterpillars.
We assemble the plum fruit bands twice a season.First in mid-May to combat the first generation of the plum fruit, and then in August. The bands should be mounted at a height of 30-50 cm above the ground, wrapping the trunk with corrugated cardboard and tying a string so that they do not slip. Fruit caterpillars wandering along the trunk will stop on the bandInstead of hibernating in the cracked bark of the tree or descending down to the leaves under the tree, they will choose a hiding place in the corrugated cardboard. To increase the effectiveness, you should carefully scrape the cracked bark before we put on the band. Each time the bands covered with pests are removed after a few weeks and destroyed (preferably burned).
Corrugated cardboard bands on tree trunks
As many people ask where to get such bands or how to make them, we explain that you can buy corrugated cardboard in a roll for this purpose or simply use old cardboard, e.g. for household appliances or electronics. We wrap the tree trunk with cardboard and tie it tightly with stringSome gardeners prefer to wrap the trunk with a double layer of cardboard. You can also buy in garden storestrunks for tree trunks covered with a sticky substance , to which the pests wandering on the trunk will simply stick.

Personally, I prefer cardboard bands, because then before destroying the bands, we can check whether, apart from the larvae of pests, there are no useful insects hidden in them, such as ladybugs or golden-eyed ones, to whom we can spare their lives. On the other hand, it only makes sense if we can actually make such a selection. In the case of bands with an adhesive substance, all caught insects have no chance of survival, but also such bands are more effective in catching pests.
We should only use plum fruit spraying as a last resortNot only because it is not harmful to the environment, but also because it is quite difficult to precisely determine the date of spraying in amateur cultivation. With the procedure, you need to hit a period of intense butterfly flight and egg laying. Spraying outside of this date will unfortunately be ineffective.
To set the date of spraying on the plum fruithang pheromone traps on the plum fruit and observe whether butterflies appear on them. Spraying should be done 3 weeks after the start of the regular flight of butterflies. Depending on the weather conditions, the first generation of plum fruit should be sprayed in the first or second decade of June, and the second generation should be sprayed in the second half of July or the first ten days of August. As you can see, these terms are quite extensive and you needto use the assessment of catches for pheromone traps
In amateur crops in gardens and home orchards, we also do not have too many to choose frompreparations for spraying plum fruitOnly Mospilan 20 SP is actually possible to recommend. fruit slivichka is used in the amount of 2g dissolved 5-9 liters of water, which is enough for spraying 100m² of the crop.Other preparations registered for the control of plum fruit are intended only for professional crops.
Spraying plums with Mospilancan be done twice per season, therefore once against the first generation of the plum fruit and once against the second generation. Remember that at least 14 days must elapse from spraying to harvesting the fruit (waiting period).
