Fertilizing strawberrieshas a great influence on plant growth, yield and fruit flavor. However, it should be remembered that strawberry does not have very high fertilization requirements, thereforefertilization of strawberriesshould be moderate, and fertilizers should be dosed at the right time. Seehow to fertilize strawberrieson the plot, what are the bestdates for fertilizing strawberriesandwhat fertilizer for strawberrieswill best suit your task.
Fertilizing strawberries - fertilizing strawberries from different producers
Growing strawberries in one place usually takes 4-5 years, because then the plants bear less fruit and it is necessary to replace them with new ones. This short period of growing strawberries, combined with its relatively low fertilization requirements, means that basicfertilization of strawberries on the plotis performed at the time of preparing the soil for planting new plants.
Strawberries grow best and yield best on light soils, but at the same time rich in humus and not too easily drying. To ensure such conditions, it is necessary to apply organic fertilizers before planting strawberries.
The bestfertilizer for strawberriesis compost, which we produce on our own plot. Manure can be a substitute. Both of these fertilizers can be used at a dose of 30 to 35 liters per 10m² of beds.
Compost can be given just before planting strawberries. In the case of manure, it should be remembered that it must not be applied immediately before planting.Manure is used under the forecrop, and if we have to give it before planting the strawberry, two conditions must be met. First, it must be well-composted manure. Under no circumstances should you give fresh manure! Secondly, it must be given no later than 5-6 weeks before the date of planting strawberries. Digested manure with the soil to a depth of 10-20 cm on light soils and 5-15 cm on heavier soils.
Bas alt flour is a very good fertilizer for strawberries , which can be used both for soil preparation for cultivation and for top dressing during cultivation. It is a mineral fertilizer of natural origin, rich in silica, which strengthens plants and makes them resistant to diseases. In addition, bas alt flour fertilizes and aerates the soil, enriching it with a rich set of macro- and microelements (including phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, copper, boron, iron and many others).
When preparing the soil for strawberries , depending on the quality of your soil, we use a dose of bas alt flour of 1.5-3 kg per 1m².Since bas alt flour does not contain nitrogen, in the following years of cultivation we can use it as an autumn fertilizer in the amount of 200-300g per 10m² bed with strawberries.
It is also worth knowing that during the growing seasonstrawberries can be completely dusted withbas alt flour, which protects them against attacks by pests and diseases. This is, among others proven method against slugs.
Before planting strawberries, it is also worth checking the pH of the soil in the strawberry beds. The optimalsoil reaction for growing strawberriesis slightly acidic with a pH of 5.6 - 6.5. In soils with a pH higher than 6.5, chlorosis may occur due to disturbance of iron uptake, and at a pH much lower than optimal, strawberries may be deficient in calcium. Therefore, if the pH of the soil is lower than 5.5, it is necessary to performliming the soil for strawberriesWe can use dolomite, popularly used in plots for this purpose.Liming the soil is performed before sowing the forecrop. We should also remember that liming must not be applied simultaneously with manure.
It is also advisable to use a forecrop for strawberries, which will improve the structure of the soil, enrich it with organic matter, and reduce the growth of weeds. Asgreen fertilizers under strawberriesyou can sow mustard, winter oilseed rape, turnip rape, lupine, horse bean, vet, field grass or mixtures of rye and winter vetch. They are mowed just before flowering, allowed to wilt, and then dug up to a depth of 15-20 cm.
You can plant strawberries on such an enriched field. The next doses of fertilizers are given when the strawberries start to bear fruit, the first dose is usually in spring, and the second dose after the harvest.
For people who cultivate strawberries as an amateur and are not able to choose the appropriate doses of fertilizers on their own, forfertilizing strawberriesI recommend multicomponent mineral fertilizers intended especially for strawberries, such as Florovit for strawberries and fruit shrubs, Fructus for strawberries, wild strawberries and raspberries, Agrecol fertilizer for strawberries, raspberries and wild strawberries or Biopon fertilizer for strawberries and wild strawberries.
Of course, there are many more of this type of fertilizer, it is impossible to list all of them. Choosingstrawberry mineral fertilizerby yourself, make sure that apart from the basic NPK formula, i.e. nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, the fertilizer also contains other macro- and micronutrients needed for strawberries, i.e. magnesium, sulfur, calcium , boron, copper, iron, manganese, molybdenum and zinc. You can also use generally available multi-component universal fertilizers, but you should avoid those with a very high nitrogen content, such as Polifoska or Azofoska.
To fertilize strawberries on the plot, we recommend the organic fertilizer Target
Usingfertilizer for strawberriesas mentioned above, you can give the year-round dose of fertilizer once in spring. However, it is more beneficial to breakstrawberry fertilizationinto two doses - the first one given in the spring (usually larger) and the second, given after harvesting the fruit. For example, if we bought Florovit fertilizer for strawberries and fruit shrubs, we can use it once in the spring (right after the start of vegetation, at the turn of March and April) at a dose of 0.25 kg of fertilizer per 10m² of strawberry beds or break it into two doses - 0, 15 kg / 10m² in spring and the rest 0.10kg / 10m² after harvesting the fruit.Regardless of the selected fertilizer, the instructions for fertilization should be on its packaging.
If we want to fertilize strawberries more ecologically, natural vermicompost will work, which in principle cannot be overdosed. It is a liquid fertilizer that is diluted with water for irrigation. The dosage is indicated on the package. Guano can be used with granular fertilizers. The guano granules are sprinkled evenly around the plants in spring and gently loosen the soil. Then we water abundantly. Guano, however, is quite a strong fertilizer, so be careful not to overdose it.
For use in amateur crops on plots and in home gardens, it is also worth recommendingecological fertilizers for strawberriesby Target , based only on natural ingredients and rich in organic substances. Not only do they perfectly fertilize strawberries, but also help maintain soil fertility.
The nextfertilization of strawberriesis done after the fruit harvest is finished, which is usually in the summer. It is necessary if in spring we applied a smaller dose of fertilizer, which must be supplemented with the dose after harvest. During this period, it is especially important to supplement primarily nitrogen and potassium, but also phosphorus, calcium and magnesium.Fertilizing strawberries after harvestingis designed to help plants produce new shoots and leaves after pruning, as well as new flower buds, which has a large impact on the fruiting of the next year.
Dofertilizing strawberries after harvestyou can apply compost, the aforementioned biohumus or guano, as well as mineral fertilizers. Just like in spring, it can be a specialstrawberry fertilizerbut also a multi-component universal fertilizer. During this period, we do not have to avoid fertilizers with a high nitrogen content. You can easily give the previously mentioned Polifoska or Azofoska.Fertilization of strawberries after harvest with nitrogen fertilizersdo not later than mid-August.
I do not recommendnitrogen fertilization of strawberries in autumn , because the fertilizers are given during this period, they will unnecessarily stimulate the growth of plants and make it difficult to enter the winter dormancy.A good choice for autumn will be the aforementioned bas alt flour, which does not contain nitrogen. The fertilizers for strawberries described in the article, both mineral and organic (ecological), can be ordered in our store.
