Late spring is a good time to start a seed lawn. If the area is not large, it can be de alt with in one afternoon.
1. Dig the substrate to a depth of 20-30 cm using a spade or a rotary tiller. If we are dealing with a weeded part of the garden or an old lawn, herbicides can be applied 3 weeks before the planned works.
2. We remove the remains of debris, glass, stones and roots.
3. We level the area with wide rakes, preferably metal ones. Before that, the substrate can be spread with a compound fertilizer in a dose of 150-300 g / m².
4. We roll the area under the lawn with a 100 kg roller, which will show where the unevenness is left. If necessary, we rake again.
5. We sow in a broadcast, scattering seeds on the soil surface in the amount of approx. 30-40 g per 1 m² (going in two perpendicular directions). The turf will then be compact and dense . We sow on a windless, cloudy day.
6. Gently rake the substrate to cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil. We use a hay rake. Thanks to good contact with the ground, the seeds sprout faster.
7. Roll the substrate again, thanks to which the grass has even better conditions for germination (roll it along and across).
8. Water the substrate with a small drop, so as not to rinse the seeds. On a hot day, water it several times a day.
We can spread agrotextile on the surface of the new lawn, which will make it difficult for birds to select seeds. Depending on the weather and the type of mixture, it can take 1 to 3 weeks to germinate. It is good if the temperature of the substrate is at least 10 ° C. The first time the grass is 8-10 cm high.
The grass is then shortened to a height of 5-6 cm. The mower knife must be sharp, otherwise the stalks will not be cut, but picked up and will turn yellow.Long-term fertilizer can be applied after the first mowing.
