Annual plants are undoubtedly a very interesting accent in every garden, and thanks to their biology of life (from germination, flowering, to seed release and death during one growing season), we can create new compositions at the bedding each year. If we want to enjoy beautiful flowers in summer, let's plan their sowing now.
In February and March, at home, sowing is done in mini-greenhouses, which will easily fit on the windowsill. They provide good humidity and temperature for seed germination.Simple plastic crates are an alternative to mini-clubs.
A suitable substrate is flower soil mixed with sand.Depending on the size of the seeds, sowing is performed in spots, e.g. large seeds of the magenta wolf, larger snapdragon, or in projection, e.g. small seeds of Cape lobelia, garden verbena.
The whole thing is covered with a very thin layer of substrate and watered regularly. In April and May, young plants are transplanted to a prepared bed to their destination. The advantage of early sowing is that you get better developed and faster flowering plants.
Not all annual species need to be sown earlier, because some of them, e.g. pinnate cosmos, sweet peas, we can successfully sow directly into the ground in April / May and get very good resultsThe first step is preparation of a bed, which should be dug, fertilized and thoroughly broken with a rake, so that the soil clods are as small as possible, then after about 14 days we start sowing.
In the bed, we designate areas for each species and sow them projectively or point-wise, gently cover the seeds with a layer of soil 2-3 times thicker than the size of the seeds. We water the entire bed until the soil is moistened so that no puddles will form.
A suitable position for most annual plants is a sunny place with well-drained soil. PBefore buying seeds, it is worth considering what species of plants you want to invite to our gardens, and their selection should be made based on the flowering time and size of the plants. It is worth using annual architectural plants constituting the background for the flowerbed, such as the castor bean with magnificent maroon leaves and flowers. Certainly this year, all summer and fall will belong to the colorful flowers!
