We breed lilies

Lilies are probably the best known of summer-flowering bulbs. The easiest to cultivate are varieties that can winter in the ground under our conditions, i.e. mainly from the group of Asian and intergroup hybrids, less often Martagon or American hybrids.Lilies can grow in one place for two or three years. They have been transplanted since mid-September.

Lilies are best propagated from bulbs growing on different parts of the plant.Reproduction from seed is also possible, but this technique is both time-consuming and unpredictable, because the new generation of plants obtained in this way does not inherit the characteristics of the original plants.

Lily bulbs are not stored like other bulbs, because they are very delicate and the scales are not protected by any additional cover. It is best to store them in slightly moist peat or sand. The planting depth in the bed depends on the size of the onion and should be twice its diameterThe exception is the white lily, the onion of which should only be covered with a 2-3 cm layer of soil.Thoroughly dig the substrate before planting.

Three ways to easily get new plants

1. Propagation from scale cuttings. The adventitious bulbs grow mainly in the lower parts of large scales, near the so-called heels, i.e. places where the husk meets the onion. The seedlings are treated with a fungicide and then placed in a moist substrate with the roots facing down. We store the boxes until the end of the year at room temperature.Later we cool it at a temperature of several degrees Celsius. In spring, plant the rooted scales in the bedding.

2. Propagation by shoot bulbs forming in the corner of the leaves (e.g. in tiger and tuberous lilies). The bulbs look like little black corals. In early autumn, the bulbs are carefully removed from the plants and planted in containers. We winter them in the cold. In spring, plant the plants in a bedding.

3. Propagation by bulbs from the underground part of the shoot. After flowering, uncover the underground part of the plant, tear off the bulbs growing on the shoot between the onion and the above-ground part of the plant.Plant the young bulbs in pots and store them in a cool place until spring.
