Practical Gardener: Dahlias in pots

Table of contents

Dahlias are known and popular bedding plants. They are also more and more often used in container cultivation.Due to the large size of the plants and large root tubers, dahlias, especially tall varieties, should be grown in large pots at least 30 centimeters in diameter and similar in height.Even then, however, due to weaker root development, the above-ground part does not reach the typical height.

In container cultivation, dahlias require sunny and warm places. The site should be sheltered from wind that can break the flower-laden shoots. For this reason, plants most often need to be supported.A substrate based on peat alone is not suitable for the cultivation of dahlias.

Plants will grow much better in a mixture of peat and garden soil.Dahlias should be watered abundantly, as long as they have drainage of excess water, ie drainage and holes in the bottom of the container. An important care procedure is also the regular removal of faded inflorescences.
