Practical Gardener: weeds attack in spring

Spring is the season of sowing and planting crops. Weeding during this period directly influences their further growth and development. Weeds, growing faster than emerging ornamental and cultivated plants, often compete with them for nutrients, water and light, which can inhibit their growth and development.Weeding can be either manual removal or the use of chemical pesticides.

By simplifying, weeds can be divided into two groups: monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous. Monocotyledonous weeds include grasses, while the remaining species are dicotyledonous weeds.

Most common dicotyledonous weeds

The most common dicotyledonous weeds include: dandelion (colloquially called dandelion), quinoa (colloquially called lebioda), mugwort, starwort, rough amaranth, speedwell, chamomile, light, violets (pansies) and many other species.

Dicotyledonous weeds are controlled by spraying the weeded surface with herbicides against dicotyledonous weeds. However, these measures only combat dicotyledonous weeds.

This group of chemicals is used rather before the emergence of ornamental and cultivated plants, because in the later stages of development, the plants that we want to protect may be destroyed. The most common monocotyledonous weed is couch grass , but also annual panacea and a very troublesome one-sided weed.

Perz is characterized by the fact that it reproduces mainly by means of underground rhizomes and is very aggressive towards other plants. In a short time, it can occupy a large area of the garden, drowning out and displacing other plant species.

Fighting monocotyledons

Herbicides can be used to control monocotyledonous weeds in flower beds and beds. The so-called non-selective (total) herbicides which destroy monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous plants. These agents can be used to weed a bed or flower beds before sowing or planting. In the case of preparations containing glyphosate, about 3-4 weeks should pass from treatment to sowing or planting.

This time is needed for the remnants of the preparation to decompose and therefore not to be toxic to emerging plants.Non-selective herbicides are also very useful for controlling plants on terraces , paths, cobblestones or in cemeteries.

To determine the possible threat to our flower beds from weeds, you can use the so-called diagnostic foil. Horticulture foil 50x50 cm thick should be placed in the flower beds in spring. Under the foil, the growing season is accelerated by a few days (thanks to the higher temperature under the foil). The conditions under the foil favor faster growth of weeds than in the rest of the garden.

Thanks to this, we can prepare in advance for possible weeding treatments or refrain from sowing or planting ornamental or cultivated plants.
