Red raspberries are mainly grown in Poland. Among the popular varieties there are types that bear fruit in two different dates. The first, traditional group of varieties bear fruit in the summer. The second group consists of new varieties, recently bred, the fruits of which we collect in the fall, often until frost.Knowing the type of raspberries grown will allow us to precisely plan the date of fruiting. Most varieties belong to the group of summer fruiting varieties.
These include, among others such varieties as: Beskid, Canby, Glen Ample, Koral, Laszka, Malling Jewel, Malling Seedling, Nawojka, Norna and Veten. They start fruiting at the end of June and finish by mid-August.These varieties have two types of shoots - fruiting two-year-olds and one-year-olds - sterile. At first, non-fruiting shoots grow from the root collar or from the buds on the roots, which start to bear fruit the next year and then die. So on the bush there will always be fruiting and non-fruiting shoots, which will bear fruit in the next year.
Cutting this group of raspberries is quite simple and mainly involves cutting out the already fruiting shoots. On the other hand, the second group of varieties, called fruit repeating raspberries, is less numerous, and includes such varieties as: Pokusa, Polana, Polka, Polesie and Poranna Rosa.It is worth paying attention to the variety Morning Dew, because it bears fruit with an unusual golden-yellow color.
A characteristic feature of these varieties is fruiting mainly on the shoots grown in the current year. We usually start the harvest at the beginning of August. If the autumn is long, we can enjoy fruiting until stronger autumn frosts destroy the constantly ripening fruit.
To enjoy delicious fruit all summer and fall, let's plant two varieties. One of the traditional varieties, such as Glen Ample with large and tasty fruits, and the other, such as Polana, which will start fruiting when the first variety has finished.
