November in the garden

Decorative garden

We cover herbaceous plants

With the first major frosts, we should begin covering the biennial plants.Providing cover for pansies, daisies and bearded carnations should be a priority, as well as for some bulbs intended for acceleration.

By shielding plants, we reduce the risk of freezing over as a result of sudden temperature changes and the negative effects of wind and harsh, early spring sun.In anticipation of the first symptoms of winter, we also cover low evergreen perennials - clothes, geese, flames.

We cover the roses

Before covering the roses, carefully inspect the plant and remove all parts showing symptoms - especially the leaves, even those that still maintain a green color. The removed parts of the plant should be burned. We cover the roses after the first strong frosts, because lower temperatures cause the natural end of the vegetation period of plants.

Sad

We can still fertilize

Even in November, we can make the first fertilization of the season. However, you should then use a combination of 3-4 years old manure and fertilizers - phosphorus and potassium.Liming the soil every four years to obtain a slightly acidic reaction. However, liming should not be carried out when we have previously spread the manure.

After fertilizing, dig the soil, leaving it in a sharp furrow. Heavier soil requires deeper digging, while lighter soil can be loosened shallower.

Latest collections

Even in late autumn, we can collect autumn raspberry varieties, as long as the fruit has not been damaged by frosts.

Autumn planting

In nurseries, October is marked by digging out fruit trees, so November is a good time to buy good quality trees. The fertile soil promotes the fruiting and development of dwarf trees, for poor ones we recommend choosing semi-dwarf varieties.

When planting, pay attention to the vaccination site, which should be a few centimeters above the ground; deep planting promotes the tree's vigorous growth. After planting, do not prune the shoots, we do this only in spring.

Vegetable

We are finishing the fall harvest

At the beginning of November, we should collect the last root vegetables - carrots, celery and parsley. You should also collect the leeks intended for consumption in summer and autumn. In the ground, we only leave winter varieties of vegetables.

We are starting the winter harvest

The first winter vegetables will appear in November - for example kale, the harvest of which can last until spring, when the plant produces flower buds.We can also start harvesting the late varieties of Brussels sprouts which - if the weather is favorable, they will appear until January.
