Jasmine trees grown in Poland are shrubs with seasonal foliage. Depending on the variety, they grow up from less than a meter to several meters. White flowers of various shape, size and number of petals are the greatest decoration of the bushes. The varieties differ not only in the shade of flowers (they can be snow-white, vanilla or cream, they can have pink or purple spots at the base of the petals), but also in foliage.Quite a large group of varieties forms decorative leaves: yellow, white-edged, spotted.
Jasminowce belong to the hydrangea family, they are close relatives of the varicose veins.About 60-70 species are known. These shrubs are native to North and Central America, Asia and Southeast Europe. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the French gardener, Victor Lemoine, was breeding jasmine trees, crossing the fragrant jasmine tree with North American species. Since then, dozens of varieties have been created.Currently, all hybrid names are defined only by the varietal name, e.g. 'Yellow Cab'.
Polish dendrologist Antoni Wróbleski has great merits in the cultivation of jasmine trees, who in the 1930s obtained a number of valuable varieties, including: 'Alabaster', 'Apollo', 'Biały Dwarf', 'Biały Sopel' ',' Justynka ',' Kalinka ',' Karolinka ',' Kasia ',' Rusałka 'and' Świtezianka '. Not all of these shrubs are easily accessible, but it is worth looking for them because they are part of our horticultural heritage.
Jasmine trees are suitable for planting in home gardens, parks and public green spaces. They are one of the most important flowering shrubs in late spring and early summer. Many species and varieties have very nice-smelling flowers. More and more varieties are distinguished by their dwarf habit and colorful leaves.
Jasmine trees are tolerant of the substrate. They grow best in clay soils, moderately moist, with a slightly alkaline to slightly acidic reaction. They do well in full sun, they can tolerate shading as well, but they bloom less abundantly then.
Cultivars with yellow or white-edged leaves in hot, dry summers can suffer from strong sunlight, so they grow best when planted in light shade. Plants need a lot of moisture during flowering. When it's dry, the flowers will fade quickly.
Jasmine trees tolerate pruning and transplanting well. Most of the species grown here are completely frost-resistant.
