Goose - indispensable rockery plant

Table of contents

Gęsiówka is one of the most popular rock perennials. The most famous species of the genus - Arabis caucasica - belongs to the so-called Rock five, i.e. species that should be found in every rock garden.

The popularity of the Caucasian geese is determined primarily by early and abundant flowering - in March and April, the whole plants are covered with four-petal flowers, creating decorative pillows. The flowers are white in the species, but more and more varieties with pink or purple flowers.

Apart from the Caucasian geese, there are also other species of the genus in gardens, e.g.Macedonian Arabis ferdinandicoburgi and Alpine Arabis alpina. The Arabis blepharophylla spiny goose has been gaining popularity recently. Plants of this species develop carmine pink flowers with narrow petals in April. They are gathered in corymbs growing above leaf rosettes. The plants then reach about 25 cm in height.

Despite their origin (naturally grown in California), they winter well in Poland, although in colder regions it is worth covering them for the winter. They require a sunny place and a moist but very well drained substrate. The winter water is particularly unfavorable.Plants are planted in small groups in rock gardens or in flower beds. They are also suitable for spring container compositions.
