June in the orchard

Thinning of fruitlets

The sooner we perform the interruption of some buds, the better. First of all, we remove deformed buds, gnawed by caterpillars or with diseases. We leave only the largest and well-developed ones, because they will produce the best fruit. The simplest principle of thinning is that only one fruit should grow from one place.

By removing some of the buds in the year of abundant fruiting, we eliminate the alternating fruiting of trees, not allowing the tree to run out.JAt the same time, instead of the whole mass of small and not very tasty fruits, there will be fewer of them on the tree, but they will grow to the typical size.

First cherries

The earliest varieties of cherries ripen at the turn of May and June. Varieties such as 'Rivan' and 'Burlat' are eagerly planted in gardens because they are among the first to mature. It is worth trying to buy them, because they have a great advantage - they are not infested by the tassel seed.

The larvae of this worm-eaten fly lay their eggs into the fruit of later varieties. When harvesting cherries, it is worth remembering that this is also the term for pruning trees of this species. We can combine these two activities and instead of picking fruits from the top and distant branches, we cut the whole boughs with fruits with a ball.

We mulch the strawberries

The first early strawberries will begin to ripen soon. A proven treatment that has a positive effect on plants is bedding mulching. The use of bedding litter has many advantages. They isolate the lying fruit from the soil, so it will not be sanded and dirty with earth.

Fruits are also less affected by gray mold, because they do not lie directly on a moist surface. The litter also significantly reduces the growth of weeds. Traditionally, straw is spread around the plants, but it can be replaced with a reusable mulch such as white fleece.
