The nature of this garden to some extent reflects the spatial arrangement of the authentic layout, i.e. the multi-storey system. Under the cover of larger trees with wide crowns, there are taller shrubs and creepers. Perennials and shrubs build the next floor.Creating a full composition in an empty space requires, unfortunately, several years. Dlatego also the largest plants need to be planted as soon as possible for the natural balance to begin to form.
The forest garden is not a labor-intensive establishment, Mother Nature does most of the work for us. As in similar naturalistic assumptions, we do not remove all organic matter, because it will constitute a natural fertilizer and a specific undergrowth. The owners of gardens with larger trees have an easier task.
You should then take care to enrich the existing stand with other species. It is worth looking around and observing what species are around us. Then we will create a garden based on native plants that will be adapted to the climate of the country.
Remember that the main inspiration is the environment. Planting plants of unnatural habit, such as the Norway maple 'Globosum', should be limited. Plants are selected depending on the prevailing conditions of the habitat. In deep shade, under the treetops, we plant ground cover plants, such as the common ivy, European hoofed beetle.
In early spring, when there are no leaves on the trees yet, the most light reaches the lower floors of the site. It is worth taking advantage of this and introducing bulbs, such as squills, sapphires, and profusely flowering early spring perennials, e.g.wood anemone, aromatic violet, medicinal primrose.
Larger perennials filling beds are, for example, a forest plant with tall and delicate inflorescences. Shrubs that tolerate partial shade include hydrangeas, jasmine, rowan tavlin. The assumption should also be supplemented with evergreen plants, so that the garden is attractive all year round. We use evergreen boxwood, rhododendrons, yews, spruces with a slow growth rate. Plants are planted in groups and asymmetrically, so that they interpenetrate.
The obligatory plants in the forest garden are ferns (especially native species), e.g. male cashew, common tongue, and spicy fern. These plants have a unique charm and elegance. Ferns are a perfect complement to undergrowth under trees.Remember that those occurring in a natural position are protected by species, but we can easily buy them in many national garden nurseries.
