Building a loft - how to build a loft

Table of contents

I am a great lover and breeder of racing pigeons at the same time. To develop my interests, I decided to build a dovecote in the garden. It was supposed to be so big that nothing would have to be added in the future. I placed the structure on concrete pillars. The dovecote is 18 meters long and 3 meters wide. On the sides I installed spacious aviaries. The skeleton of the building is made of 10x10 cm square timber. The whole thing is covered with boards, which are connected to the so-called "Own pen". I covered the roof with shingles.

I divided the dovecote into 7 parts, one of which is a utility storeroom. Inside, there is a corridor from which you can enter individual rooms. The floor in the building is a wooden grate. Thanks to this, I obtained ventilation, which is so important for the he alth of the pigeons. The area of the loft is 54 m².

I use the space between the ground and the floor to store the remains of beams, boards, slats, pots, etc. In order to prevent them from being visible, we planted a lot of plants around, which perfectly mask this storeroom. A boxwood hedge worked perfectly in this role. A 1.5 m wide terrace built in front of the loft also partially covered the space under the floor.

Additionally, I broke two 5-meter pots in front of the terrace. In the middle of them, I installed stairs. I used railway sleepers to build them. It is a very durable material, so it will fulfill its role for a long time. Together with my wife, we filled the pots with fertile soil and compost. Then we planted 20 Euonymus bushes, alternating several varieties.
