Woody cuttingsis one of the simplest methods of reproducing trees and shrubs that shed their leaves for the winter. Such cuttings are much less prone to water loss and wilt than herbaceous cuttings and semi-woody cuttings, but take more time to take root. Seehow and when to take woody cuttings , how to store them until spring and how to take root. With this instruction you will increase the number of rooted cuttings even twice!

Woody cuttings are best propagated by frost-resistant trees and shrubs which shed their leaves for winter and have a high regenerative capacity. This way plants can be propagated even by gardeners who do not have much experience in planting yet .

Woody cuttings cannot be used to reproduce shrubs that have exceptionally hard wood , such as barberry, hawthorn or holly. Their shoots do not want to develop roots.
Good to know!
Woody cuttings are best taken from young plants that grow in sunny places. Do not pick seedlings if the plants show signs of disease or pests.
Woody cuttings are harvested in late autumn or winter, in the leafless periodIn the case of plants with lower frost resistance, such as David's bud, it is better to pick the cuttings right after the leaves fall, before the arrival of winters (October - November). Then we can be sure that we take them from he althy shoots, not damaged by frost.
From highly frost-resistant trees and shrubs, seedlings can be harvested until March, when there are no large frosts. We never pick seedlings in frosty weather

Woody cuttings are cut from he althy, this year's shoots, which have already finished their growth . For this purpose, shoots with fresh bark (usually more vividly colored), which do not have branches and are straight, are sought.
Use a secateurs or a sharp knife to cut off the shoot from the plant near the guide (on the border of last year's and this year's wood). Then trim the shoot just below the base of the bud and just above the apical bud.
Taking woody cuttings
Properly trimmed seedling should be a pencil thickness, 15 to 20 cm long, and at least two pairs of well-developed buds . It's worth taking a pencil with you as it really is a good measure of properly trimmed cuttings!
Trimming the woody cuttings
If you take seedlings from trees or shrubs that shed their leaves for the winter, this treatment should be performed when there are no leaves on the shoots . If you are taking seedlings from evergreen shrubs - remove all leaves from the bottom part of the seedling (up to 2/3 of its length).
Good to know!
The cut of the upper side of the seedlings at an angle will make it easier for water drops to flow from this place and reduce the risk of disease penetration. Thanks to this, we will not confuse the top of the seedling with its lower part. Additionally, paint the upper end with garden ointment or emulsion paint with the addition of fungicide.
Before placing the cuttings in the substrate, they must be stimulated to root To do this, use a sharp knife to cut a thin piece of bark at the root of the seedling, and then dip the seedling root into the rooting agent.
Rooters are preparations containing auxins and other compounds that accelerate the rooting process. For woody cuttings, use Korzonek D , available in a liquid or powder version. Korzonek D contains basic micronutrients, rooting cofactors and a specific form of zinc, which acts as an activator of the rooting process, as well as vitamin C.

Some gardeners also practiceplanting seedlings in the ground outsideHowever, then they need to be well protected against frost (e.g. with a thick layer of dry leaves pressed against the branches of conifers).
Note!If you are preparing woody cuttings of different plants - do not forget to label them (name of the species and variety).
When spring comes and the ground is thawing, you can plant woody cuttings in pots with soil or transfer them to a bedHowever, do not forget to first harden the seedlings, i.e. gradually accustom them to the prevailing conditions outside. It is also good if the seedlings stay under the tunnel in the first period.

Make vertical, quite deep holes in the soil and place the seedlings in themso that only short, several centimeters long sections protrude above the ground (only the fragment with the highest bud). Tamp the soil around the seedlings thoroughly (preferably gently knead with your hand). It is important that you do not damage the lower part of the shoots while transplanting the seedlings into the bed, as there may be barely visible roots of the roots there (therefore, do not stick the seedlings into the ground - they should be placed in previously prepared holes).
