Simple garden irrigation system - how to build step by step

Table of contents

In many gardensa garden irrigation systemis a must. It is impossible to water a large garden yourself, especially in periods of drought, when you need to irrigate every day. Usually, however, before installing a garden irrigation system, we are stopped by the high price of such an investment. Meanwhile, we can inexpensively build asimple garden irrigation systemthat will meet most of our needs.

Garden irrigation system

What should be the garden irrigation system

Many of us struggle with the problem of watering their garden every year. Watering toto be effective must be:

  • firstly, it is abundant (but not too much so that it does not harm our plants),
  • secondly systematic,
  • thirdly cheap

The first requirement, unfortunately, we have to make sure that our plants get the right amount of water, and at the same time not to overdo it with this amount. While there is no need to worry about excess water when watering the lawn, arable plants, especially in the flowering or fruiting phase, react very positively to water, provided it is properly served.
The second requirement is regularity. There is nothing worse for plants and grass, such as long periods without water or prolonged periods of over-hydration. Plants must be provided with the right amount of water, given in the right way at the right time.It is a guarantee of a lush green lawn and abundant crops on our plot. The garden irrigation systemmust therefore facilitate the appropriate dosage of water.
The third is, in my opinion, as important as the other two, and sometimes maybe even more important. Watering from plumbing systems is, of course, very convenient if there are such installations, unfortunately, convenience also comes with costs. Meanwhile, anyone who has any water intake on their plot or nearby, can use it to power thegarden irrigation systemThose who do not have such a water intake can use rainwater for watering or more With advanced solution, be tempted to dig a small deep well.As a curiosity, I would like to say that an average single-family house with a gable roof (200m²) can collect about 65 m³ of water during these four months.

An irrigation system for everyone

If we already have an alternative water source, we must somehow transport it and spread it around our garden. For this we will need our owngarden irrigation systemVarious irrigation systems are available on the market - professional irrigation systems with humidity and rain sensors, drip systems, sprinkler installations, etc.Their common feature is that they consist of 3 basic elements:

  • pumps
  • snakes
  • sprinkler

Of course, it would be best to use professional automatic garden irrigation installed by a special company. Such an installation is equipped with rain and humidity sensors and a special electronic control unit that controls the irrigation itself and switches the entire system on or off at the right moment. Its biggest downside, however, is the price - not everyone can afford it. Fortunately, with a little bit of your own work, you canbuild a simple garden irrigation system , thanks to which the irrigation of our garden from the split watering can jump to the age of pumps, hydrophores and sprinklers.

How efficient a garden's irrigation system should be

Will we water our garden with a hand sprinkler or a stationary sprinkler? Will these devices work simultaneously or maybe each separately? Knowing the efficiency of these devices and the area that can be watered, we can simplify count how much water we need to then properly select the supply pumpgarden irrigation system

The area and shape of the garden powered by the irrigation system

On such a plot, we should set up 6 to 8 sprinklers. "
Turning on all these devices at the same time would require the delivery of almost 8,000 - 9,000 thousand. liters of water per hour under a pressure of approx. 4 bar. A pump of this capacity is already a significant expense!

It is more reasonable and much cheaper to arrange such irrigation in 3 sections, 2 sprinklers each working simultaneously.
Increasing the cost by the necessary manifold and an additional hose will still save a lot of money on the purchase of a smaller pump.
In our case, we need a pump that will be able to supply two sprinklers and maybe an additional manual gun. We require the operating pressure of this pump to be a minimum of 2 to 2.2 bar, so that the sprinklers work and water the planned area.

Pipes supplying the garden irrigation system

The first and most important rule is their thickness. Comparing them to veins, as in the human body, the main lines (arteries) should be the thickest and the largest, and then it is the turn of the thinner sections (veins) supplying the sprinklers. In my opinion, a hose should be used on the bus:

  • 3/4 "with a distance from the pump to the manifold approx. 20m-30m,
  • 1 "with a distance from the pump to the manifold approx. 30m-50m,
  • 1.5 "for distances from the pump to the manifold over 50m

We use 1/2 "hose to power sprinklers or guns. The second rule is: the fewer connectors, the better. Generally - simplicity is the strength. try to have as few connectors and connections as possible. An example of a ready-made installation and its components look like this:
