The flowering season of forsythiafalls around when it is still gray and the remaining plants only wake up from their winter sleep. Although it is certain thatforsythia blooms in spring , it is not easy to give one specificflowering date for forsythiabecause individualforsythia varieties bloom slightly at another timeFind out which forsythia flowers earliest and which latest, which affects the length and quality of forsythia bloomingand when forsythia flowering period may be delayed.
Forsythia blooms in spring, even before the leaves appear
Forsythia is the earliest flowering ornamental shrub , signaling the arrival of spring. Forsythia flowers appear on the shoots even before the leaves develop on them. The basicflowering term for intermediate forsythia(Forsythia x intermedia) is April. However, thanks to breeding, varieties that bloomed earlier (in March) or later (late April to early May) were obtained. Theearliest flowering strains of intermediate forsythiainclude 'Goldrausch', 'Golden Times', 'Spring Glory', 'Primula', 'Vitellina' and 'Sunday'. The varietiesentering the flowering period byat the latest are: 'Spectabilis' and 'Lynwood'. They finish flowering in May.
Earlier than the intermediate forsythia, it bloomspendulous forsythia(Forsythia suspensa) - already in the second half of March. Korean forsythia(Forsythia ovata) starts flowering a bit later - at the turn of March and April. On the other hand, the earliest flowering forsythia is the green forsythia(Forsythia viridissima) 'Citrus Swizzle'. In favorable weather conditionsblooms from the beginning of March
The flowering date for forsythia , depending on the weather conditions at the beginning of spring, may differ from that given by growers. If the weather is sunny, warm and there is little rainfall, then Forsythia blooms earlier, blooms longer and more profusely significantly shortens.
The place where forsythia is grown also affects its timing and flowering lengthMost forsythia cultivars require a sunny location, only a few (e.g. 'Densiflora' or 'Golden Times') can tolerate slight shading. If we choose a shaded place, the flowering time will be delayed and shorter, and there will be fewer flowers
The flowering period of forsythia can be significantly delayedand even the flowering can be completely inhibited if we prune the forsythia bushes at the wrong time. Too late (fall) or too early (early spring)pruning of forsythia shoots may result in the loss of a significant number or all of the flower budsFlower buds develop on forsythia bushes in the fall. Therefore, it should be remembered that we only prune the forsythia after flowering is finished. However, we do this as soon as possible, as soon as the forsythia has faded.
