Leaky rose leaves. Where do the holes in rose leaves come from?

Table of contents

Leaky rose leavesare a common symptom. They can be caused by the attack of various pests. Such shrubs lose their decorative value very quickly. Proper and quick identificationof pests that make holes in the leaves of roseswill allow you to choose the right measures to fight them. It is worth knowing that the holes in the leaves of roses can also be the result of… disease! Seewhere the holes in rose leaves come fromand what to do when we spot them.

Leaky rose leaves

Hymenoptera larvae

The most commonpests biting holes in rose leavesare larvae of hymenoptera, which are small insects resembling flies. One of them isrose slime(Caliroa aethiops). Its larvae cause damage to rose bushes, gnawing holes between the leaf veins , consequently leading to their so-called skeletonization. The larvae of the mucosa may be visible on the leaves of the roses. They are yellow-green in color, about 10 mm long and covered with dark mucus.

Another wasp that attacks rose bushes is therose peeler(Arge rosae). Its larvaebite sinus holes in rose leaves, starting from the edge of the leaf blade and ending with the main nerve, forming the so-called pigeon eatersThe stripper larvae are bluish-green in color with black spots around the nipples and about 20 mm in length. During feeding, their abdomen is curled downwards or raised upwards in a s-shape.

Another commonrose pest that gnaws holes in leaves is the rose pest(Allantus cinctus). Young larvae of this wasp larvae feed on the underside of rose leaves, scraping the skin and crumb from them. The upper side of the leaf is left untouched, which results in the formation of characteristic windows. Older larvae biteirregular, oblong holes between the veins of rose leavesThe larvae of the rosewood are 10-15 mm long. Their dorsal side is dark green with delicate white nipples, and the ventral - gray-green with a velvety, bluish coating. The head of the larva is light brown. In an emergency, the larvae curl up into a characteristic, snail-like spiral. "

Fighting hymenoptera larvaeis relatively easy. They appear on the same rose bushes every year, as adult individuals and larvae hibernate in fallen leaves or in the soil near the bush. In the fight against these pests, sometimes it is enough to transplant the bush to another place. After spotting pests, leaves and shoots along with feeding larvae should be removed and destroyedIn a small amount, hymen larvae do not do much damage to roses, and many of them are eaten by birds visiting the garden. In the case of a large number of pests, spraying with insecticides can be used. On individual shrubs, a ready-made Karate Spray is enough, and in the case of a large number of shrubs to be sprayed, it is worth reaching for a Karate Gold concentrate.

Butterfly caterpillars

In addition to the larvae of waspsholes in the leaves of roses can also be bitten by caterpillars of some butterflies , for example the nevus (Orgyia antiqua). Caterpillars of this butterfly are among the most beautiful in Poland. They are about 25 mm long, black and gray with red warts, brushes of black hair on the front of the body, and four brushes of hair on the back - yellow for future males or brown for future females. The nevus caterpillars bitelarge, irregular, extensive holes in the leaves of rosesWith a large presence of caterpillars, it can even lead to pigeons, but these are rare cases.

An effective way to fight this pest iscollecting caterpillars and destroying butterfly eggs found on rose shootsFighting nevus larvae is necessary only when they are numerous. Then the rose bushes should be sprayed with an insecticide, e.g. the previously mentioned Karate Spray or Karate Gold.

Beetles

Otherbeetles are biting holes in rose leaves One of the most common on roses is Phyllopertha horticola. It is a small beetle (10-12 mm long) similar to the May beetle. It is characteristically colored. It has a chestnut-brown wing cover and a green-blue head. The entire body of the insect is covered with hairs. Adult beetles gnaw large irregular holes between the veins in rose leaves and in flower petals. When in large numbers, they eat the leaves completely. Heavily damaged plants sometimes die.

Anotherbeetle feeding on the leaves of roses is the silverfish(Phyllobius argentatus). Reaches about 4-5.5 mm in length. It has a light green body covered with shiny golden green scales. This beetle gnaws narrow, deep, irregular holes in the marginal part of the leaf blade.
Fighting beetles is necessary only when the damage they cause threatens rose bushes. For this purpose, you can spray Mospilan 20 SP (4 g of the agent in 10 l of water). Single beetles should be caught and removed from the garden. You should also remember to combat the soil-dwelling beetle larvae (grubs), which can damage the roots of rose bushes.

Rose anthracnose

Leaky leaves of roses may also be the result of the plant being taken over by a fungal disease- anthracnose. Then on the upper side of the rose leaves circular, initially red and later dark brown spots with a diameter of 5 mm appear. Characteristic flatulence develops on the underside of the leaves where the spots are located. As the disease develops, the center of the spots dries up and the tissues crumble, creating holes in the leavesThe leaves turn yellow around the spots. In the last stage of the disease, the leaves fall down massively.

Infected shoots and leaves should be removed on a regular basis. We also grab fallen leaves under the plant. Rose anthracnosis is combated with Dithane NeoTec 75 WG in a dose of 2 g in 1 liter of water. Spraying with the water solution of Dithane NeoTec 75 WG is performed every 14 days (maximum 4 times a season).
