Historical rosesget their name from the period in which these beautiful shrubs come. Mostvarieties of historical roseswere bred in the 18th and 19th centuries. Some varieties date back to the 15th century. Initially, there were few of them. They owe their heyday in the field of production of new varieties to their counterparts from the Far East, because it is with them that breeders crossed European varieties, producing new varieties.
Damascus rose 'Madame Hardy' is a shrub that can reach 1.5 heights. The flowers are white and give off a lemon scent. Unfortunately, it only flowers once a season
Allhistorical rosescan be divided into several groups:
French roses- one of the oldest roses derived from R. gallica roses. Their flowers are usually about 7-10 cm. They bloom in mid-summer and have a sweet fragrance. The flowers grow singly or in groups of 3. The flowers are colored in shades of pink or red.
Damascus roses- from the crossing of R. gallica and R. phoenica or R. gallica and R. moschata. Their flowers are semi-double or full, about 7 cm in diameter, and have a very intense fragrance. They usually grow in loose clusters. They bloom only once (R. gallica and R. phoenica) or repeat flowering (R. gallica and R. moschata). The colors of these roses oscillate between white and pink.
White Roses- R. x alba, are known not to require ideal soil conditions. Most of them also do well in shaded positions. Their habit is loose, shoots are suspended under the influence of flowers, which are up to 11 cm.The flowers are usually white or slightly pink in color.
Bourbon roses- made from the crossing of Damascus and Chinese roses. Plants in this group usually bloom several times during the season. Their flowers reach up to 10 cm, they are full and smell beautiful. The bushes are lush and branchy. The flowers of Bourbon roses can be of various colors: white, pink, purple and even mottled.
Bourbon rose 'Louis Odier' grows up to 2 m in height. It blooms in shades of pink and purple, repeating flowering from June to October. Flowers large, full, with an intense fragrance
Portland roses- similar to Bourbon roses, they are created by crossing the same group of roses. However, they arose slightly earlier than Bourbon roses. Their flowers, in pink and carmine colors, are full and have intense fragrances. Their habit is tall and the shoots are stiff and straight.
Centifolia roses- R. x centifolia, have full or semi-double spherical flowers in shades of white, pink or purple. They grow in bunches that are very heavy, and the shoots bend under their weight. They usually bloom only once a season and have a very intense fragrance.
Moss roses- they got their name from the fact that the flower buds and shoots of these roses are covered with a thick layer of mossy bloom, which gives off an intense fragrance. They are easy to grow, do not require special conditions, and their flowers are about 10cm in size. They bloom in mid-summer, usually in groups.
