Oleander (Nerium), as a rule, blooms profusely and long (from spring to early autumn). Variegated, fragrant, large or medium-sized flowers are the greatest decoration of the plant. Find out what are thereasons for the lack of oleander flowersand how to remedy them. Here are9 of the most common reasons why oleander doesn't bloomor its flowering is impaired. See what to do to make your oleander bloom beautifully!
Oleander in full flowering
1. Oleander does not bloom because it lacks sun and warmth
A warm and sunny position is a prerequisite for abundant flowering of oleanderThe plant should be placed in a place that receives a lot of sunlight, e.g. on a balcony, porch, terrace. The optimal temperature is 15 - 25 ° C. When the temperature drops below 15 ° C, the oleander is too cold and the plant may stop flowering.
2. Oleander does not bloom because it lacks moisture
The plant reacts to water deficiencywith browning, wilting, falling flowers and falling flower budsOleander should be watered daily, and on hot, sunny days even twice a day. Remember that the soil in the pot should always be moist. Only in winter, when the plant passes through the dormant period, watering should be limited.
3. Oleander does not bloom because the watering water is too cold
The plant should be watered with water at room temperature. Watering with cold water can cause a thermal shock, resulting inshedding flower buds . Therefore, always water the oleander with stagnant water, preferably kept in the same place as the plant.
4. Oleander does not bloom because it is poorly fertilized
During its growth and flowering period (spring to early fall), oleander requires fertilization. When nutrients are lackingoleander blooms poorly and the flowers are finerMulti-component fertilizer for flowering plants (e.g. in the form of a concentrate that dissolves in water for watering) should be applied once a week) . The fertilizer for flowering plants contains phosphorus and potassium - the ingredients necessary to form flower buds. Over-fertilization with nitrogen fertilizers is unfavorable -green parts of oleander develop excessively at the expense of flowers
5. Oleander does not bloom because it is trimmed badly
Pruning oleander shoots stimulates abundant flowering . Young plants are pruned for 2-3 years, leaving the remaining part on which flower buds are formed. Flowering is delayed but much more profuse.
6. Oleander does not bloom as it is exposed to direct rainfall
Oleander flowers do not like heavy rainas well as sprinkling them when watering. They wilt and fall off then, and are more likely to be attacked by fungal diseases. If the plants are not covered, they should be moved to a dry place during rainfall, and water for watering should be poured directly into the pot.
7. Oleander does not bloom because faded inflorescences are not removed
Dead inflorescences are cut on a regular basis. This treatmentstimulates the flowering of the plantand protects it against fungal diseases.
8. Oleander does not bloom due to diseases or pests
Gray mold, in addition to leaves and shoots, also attacks flowers. A white or gray bloom appears on them.Oleander flowers and buds die and fallThe disease is favored by excessive humidity, cold, over-fertilization and too high plant density.Infected inflorescences should be removed and burned, and the plant should be sprayed with a fungicide, e.g. Topsin M 500 SC or the natural preparation Biosept Active.
Aphids create colonies, among others. on the inflorescences, damaging them. Natural remedies are used to combat aphids: Agrocover Spray, Emulpar 940 EC or garlic-scented potassium soap.
9.Oleander does not bloom because it is dormant when it is too hot
In autumn, the plant must be moved to a bright, airy room with a temperature of 5-10 ° C, where it will be dormant and remain until spring. If the plant hibernates in a room with a higher temperature, flowering weakens.
